Following a summer of unexpected struggles and rampant changes to her career, lifestyle, and social circle; Adrianna Stepiano craved a creative escape. A graphic artist by trade, she found herself uninspired and lacking imagination. As an avid reader, she found solace in fiction but desired more.


For several years the idea of a merfolk based story swam around in her head; inspired by family vacations to coastal states and a life spent on the shores of the magnificent Great Lakes. Finally in 2009, a prayer brought Joseph and Seraphin to life by way of the written word.

What can you tell us about your MEMOIR OF A MERMAID series?

The MEMOIR OF A MERMAID series is the first person account of Seraphin Shedd. As the title suggests, this is her memoir and she's a mermaid. Pretty straight forward, right? Not quite. This is not your ordinary, magical mermaid series. And Seraphin is not your giddy, love struck mer-girl.

How many books do you anticipate being in the overall series?

The series just launched with Book #1, WHEN, AT LAST, HE FOUND ME. There are (and I mean that they exist on my computer) four books in the series. Book #2 is scheduled to be released in January 2013.

How did you go about world-building and creating your mer-world?

What's unique about this merfolk series is that there is no reference to underground magical kingdoms, because they do not exist in Seraphin's world. And they do not exist in our world. I didn't want this book to be a fairy tale, I wanted it to be as true to our reality as possible. Merfolk live next door to us, they hide in underground caverns, not underwater palaces. At times, the life of a mermaid can be considered shameful as they are mutants, not humans.

Ariel gave up her voice to become a human. What would you give up if offered the opportunity to be a mermaid?

I'm not sure I'd want to be a mermaid, and neither is Seraphin. She feels like she has to give up her life to be this "thing" and in Book #1, the reader will sympathize with her. At times, this book is very exciting, but it is no Disney Princess story.

If you could be a mermaid for a day, what would you do?

Swim! Is that too obvious? I'd also finally get some use out of my seashell bra!
