Want More Female Superheroes? Help Support New TV Series JUST SUPER!

Hey Bookworms! So, today's post isn't book-related. Sorry about that! It's related to superheroes, though, and who doesn't like superheroes?

Not just superheroes, but female superheroes. Who doesn't like seeing a girl kick butt? Boys shouldn't get to have all the fun, after all!

My friend Rebecca Kopec is an actress, and together with fellow Executive Producers Adam Carpenter andJesi Mullins, she's putting together a new TV series for the web revolving around superheroes called Just Super. A web series is something that airs online rather than on one of the premium/cable/network channels on your TV.

Think Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible (Also about super heroes...and villains!) or Felicia Day's The Guild or The Lizzie Bennett Diaries or The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy or Video Game High School or... Well, you get the picture! Some of them are more well-known than others, and a lot of them have niche followings with rabid fans.

Just Super has the potential to be the next beloved hit web series to come to the internet!

Here's the first look at the series:

Emer had it all. Except for fame, money, recognition, and a sense of direction in life.

But now she's got super-powers and a dangerous destiny ahead of her. Still needs a sense of direction though...

Her friends Stacy and Danny, along with a mysterious mentor in a trench coat, are eager to help...if only they could stop arguing.

One reason that everyone wants Just Super to succeed stems from something that the legendary Joss Whedon (You know, he made Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly and The Avengers and lots of other cool things!) said last year that went viral around the internet:

Our good friend Joss Whedon recently spoke out about sexism in the comic book movie industry.

Just Super wants to be a defining voice in that conversation

We want to inspire anyone who feels powerless in their day to day life. We want to bust stereotypes

We want to encourage any small team of artists to make their dreams a reality. We want to shake up nerd culture.

We want to put women front and center in the storytelling and production of these stories.

We want to make you laugh.

The Just Super team is on IndieGoGo trying to raise enough money for the production costs of a full season of Just Super to make it look more sparkly and awesome. (SFX are a lot all by themselves!)

There are only 5 days left in their campaign, and they're halfway to their goal. They only need to raise another $5,000 to bring this series to your computer, and you can help make it a reality for as little as a $10 donation that is fully tax-deductible! You can even support FOR FREE just by sharing the campaign and talking it up on social media. Sharing is caring, and helps spread the word!

You can share in many ways:

Sometimes a supervillain (read: the IRS) steals all your money, but that shouldn't stop a superhero like YOU!

  • Sharing is caring! Share this page! Share our trailer! Share our website! Share it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Tindr (swipe right!)
  • Can you (or better yet, your company!) sponsor our project? We would love to partner with corporate sponsors! We will proudly display any logo. The bat-signal is logo. Your company could BE our bat-signal!
  • Can you donate any equipment/transportation/food? We love fancy cameras, BOOMS! (we love boom mics), pizza, Zipcar memberships. There are lots of factors that go into the producing of an online sitcom, and those factors can ALSO BE DONATED!

If you like superheroes and/or empowered females, or heck, just like binge-watching a TV series

(I see you sitting on your couch watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Orange is the New Black on Netflix!),

then take a look at Just Super and help us bring the show to your computer, even if you can only help by spreading the word!!!

Here's the official press release if you'd like a little more info, and information on the actors, writers, and producers can all be found on the IndieGoGo page!

NEW FEMALE-LED ONLINE SITCOM TO FILM in NY THIS SPRING

Making the “every-woman” a super-woman

New York, NY, March 8, 2015– Production is beginning on a new online sitcom that promises to bust stereotypes of female superheroes and redefine what it means to be “super”.  Just Super is the passion project of Cupcakes & Wine Productions. What’s being described as a “superhero buddy-comedy… with wine” will begin shooting this April in New York City, a familiar background for many a hero. Cupcakes & Wine Productions seeks to honor nerd culture and the ever-popular superhero trend, but also aims to showcase women of all types in every leading role.

As women in the industry, we call for quality representation in all roles. We sometimes forget that we can also be our own champions. This is us being the change, not just waiting around for it.
– Executive Producer Rebecca Kopec

All too often, female superheroes (even when played by Scarlett Johansson) are pushed to the sidelines in the final product as well as promotional materials. Just Super will place women front and center in the storytelling and production. Cupcakes & Wine hopes that Just Super will reach a new online audience and inspire anyone who doesn’t feel super in their day to day life.

I grew up a loud and proud she-nerd. My heroes were scientists, warriors, world leaders, mages - and all of them female. I love and believe in this genre because of the empowerment it gave me as a woman.
– Executive Producer Jesi Mullins

Cupcakes & Wine Productions is currently running an IndieGoGo campaign to help raise funds for their first season. If interested in supporting the project, please visit http://igg.me/at/justsuperseries or facebook.com/JustSuperSeries
