Derrolyn Anderson is the author of the MARINA'S TALES quartet.  Last year, I reviewed the first two books for Splash and planned to review the remainder of the series this year, but I don't think I can squeeze them in before the end of Splash, so look for the reviews later this year.  Derrolyn also stopped by last year's Splash for a fun guest post featuring The Mermaids of MARINA'S TALES.

What was the inspiration behind MARINA'S TALES?

I used to live in Aptos, the California beach town where the story takes place. There really is an old dilapidated WWI era cement tanker parked at the end of a pier, and if I were a mermaid, I think it would be a dandy place to haul up!

Can you tell new readers a little bit about the series?

MARINA'S TALES are told from the perspective of sixteen year old Marina, a privileged girl who has been brought up traveling the world with her scientist father. Things seem to come very easily to Marina, and when she is forced to spend her senior year living with her aunt in a small seaside town she begins to understand why! As the series progresses, the plot thickens, and Marina discovers some disturbing truths hidden just beneath the surface... Oh, and true love as well!

What went into your world-building when creating your mer world?

I didn’t do a whole lot of in- depth research; I envisioned my mermaids as being similar to other intelligent marine life, like dolphins and whales. My mermaids are curious about people, but wary and cautious. I wrote them to be as innocent as animals, playful, carefree and ignorant about most things human.

Now that MARINA'S TALES have concluded, what are you working on now?

After I wrapped up book four, I plunged right in to my next series. It’s about a girl with an unusual form of synesthesia, with the working title THE ATHENA EFFECT. Like Marina, my main character is a real fish out of water, although she is faced with an entirely different set of circumstances. I’m thrilled with how it’s coming along, and hope to have it on line by the end of August/Sept. I have some plans in the works for a fun give-away to go with the launch. Can’t wait!!!

Ariel gave up her voice to become a human. What would you give up if offered the opportunity to be a mermaid?

That’s a toughie, because as a mother I could never leave my three beautiful daughters (not to mention their dad!) behind – Even for something as tempting as a carefree life under the sea. I would, however, shave my head, get a tattoo or go bungee jumping for one day as a mermaid. Would that be enough?

If you could be a mermaid for a day, what would you do?

I would try and find Atlantis, and maybe check out the Titanic if I had time. My mermaids swim really fast, so it’s a possibility...
