Anyone who is fascinated with the mysterious world of animals is going to love HOW TO SPEAK ANIMAL. This is a fantastic new entry in the world of children's non-fiction -- but that is to be expected from National Geographic! National Geographic is always one of the most-asked for, most trusted lines when it comes to children wanting to learn more about wildlife. The gorgeous photos they always feature in magazines carry over to their books with fantastic action shots sure to captivate young readers.
Their newest installment, HOW TO SPEAK ANIMAL, is attention-grabbing from the very headline -- after all, who doesn't wish they could talk to animals better? My niece is in third grade and wants to be a vet when she grows up. We looked at this one together this summer and she was completely enchanted. Her favorite entries, of course, were learning more about household pets such as dogs and gerbils (The closest we could get to her guinea pig), but she was also intrigued by all the facts on animals she knew little about..
Granted, this book doesn't actually teach you how to literally talk to animals. You're not going to walk up to a dog and suddenly be able to converse about what they did all day. But it will teach you about the different ways animals communicate. The book introduces you right off to the fact that animals communicate through auditory, visual, tactile, and/or chemical means:
You'll see these images throughout the book to indicate the communication style for each animal. Each section is about two pages long and gives off some fun animal facts as well as talks a bit about their communication style. Sections are broken up in fun, colorful ways so that it doesn't look like solid text and is easy and fun for information to be absorbed, such as these fun breakout fact areas:
Here are a few full page scans, courtesy of National Geographic for the RockStar Book Tour, to give you an up-close look at a few of the striking images and a glimpse at the informational content within the book:
HOW TO SPEAK ANIMAL is easy to consume at your convenience depending on what animal you're in the mood to learn more about when you pick it up! Informational and fun, this will appeal to animal lovers of all ages and makes a great addition to personal libraries and school/classroom libraries alike!
