A Twist in the Tail Thursdays features all this and more!

Hi bookworms! Welcome to A TWIST IN THE TAIL Thursday! *confetti*

This week is the book birthday of TWO books that fit into this category:

WICKED AS YOU WISH by Rin Chupeco and MERMAID MOON by Susann Cokal!

I've been so excited for both of these releases, and I know you have as well.

WICKED AS YOU WISH:

I'm reading this one now and it's full of asides that twist in fairy tales such as The Snow Queen and classic tales such as Alice in Wonderland in new and twisted ways. Fairy tale characters are real, and so is magic...or it was, before it was banned after the Wonderland Wars. Now, the fallen Avalon's heir is once again about to set the world on fire....if he can stay alive, of course!

There are so many things happening in this one, and it's a blend of so many myths and tales and cultures; it's going to be a lot of fun!

MERMAID MOON:

You've already heard me waxing poetic about this one because it's SO PRETTY, and, of course, it's all about the mermaids!

The book is GORGEOUS. Here's an early mock-up of it from ALA Midwinter in January (My store hasn't gotten my pre-order in yet *cries forever*).

It has STAINED PAGES. I have an early mock-up of what the final hardcover will look like and it is so, so, SO gorgeous.(Take off the jacket and the surprise is STUNNING!)

I mean, just LOOK!

And here it is with its big sister, the Printz nominated KINGODM OF LITTLE WOUNDS:

Will you be picking up either or both of these this week?

SUMMARY:

Many years ago, the magical Kingdom of Avalon was left desolate and encased in ice when the evil Snow Queen waged war on the powerful country. Its former citizens are now refugees in a world mostly devoid of magic. Which is why the crown prince and his protectors are stuck in…Arizona.

Prince Alexei, the sole survivor of the Avalon royal family, is in hiding in a town so boring, magic doesn’t even work there. Few know his secret identity, but his friend Tala is one of them. Tala doesn’t mind—she has secrets of her own. Namely, that she’s a spellbreaker, someone who negates magic.

Then hope for their abandoned homeland reignites when a famous creature of legend, and Avalon’s most powerful weapon, the Firebird, appears for the first time in decades. Alex and Tala unite with a ragtag group of new friends to journey back to Avalon for a showdown that will change the world as they know it.

Title:  MERMAID MOON
Author: Susann Cokal
Release Date: March 3, 2020
Publisher: Candlewick Press

SUMMARY:

An award-winning author tells of a mermaid who leaves the sea in search of her landish mother in a captivating tale spun with beautiful prose, lush descriptions, empathy, and keen wit.

Blood calls to blood; charm calls to charm. It is the way of the world. Come close and tell us your dreams.

Sanna is a mermaid — but she is only half seavish. The night of her birth, a sea-witch cast a spell that made Sanna’s people, including her landish mother, forget how and where she was born. Now Sanna is sixteen and an outsider in the seavish matriarchy, and she is determined to find her mother and learn who she is. She apprentices herself to the witch to learn the magic of making and unmaking, and with a new pair of legs and a quest to complete for her teacher, she follows a clue that leads her ashore on the Thirty-Seven Dark Islands. There, as her fellow mermaids wait in the sea, Sanna stumbles into a wall of white roses thirsty for blood, a hardscrabble people hungry for miracles, and a baroness who will do anything to live forever.

From the author of the Michael L. Printz Honor Book THE KINGDOM OF LITTLE WOUNDS comes a gorgeously told tale of belonging, sacrifice, fear, hope, and mortality.
