Can't Wait For...CHOSEN ONES by Veronica Roth

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hi Bookworms!

This is NOT the WoW I thought I'd be sharing today. (That title got bumped to next week, oops! But that's how excited I am for today's book!) Until this week, I didn't even know this book existed. But when Entertainment Weekly broke the news broke that Veronica Roth was publishing an adult novel in 2020 entitled CHOSEN ONES, together with a cover reveal, summary, AND an excerpt, I was instantly hooked. I very rarely read previews (And this is the second book I've read an excerpt for in the last week, cooer me surprised!), but the summary for this ensnared me right away.

I grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and reading books where someone was a "Chosen One." I still read and watch the trope. But what happens AFTER? After the final, powerful showdown? Once the world is normal again? How dose a hero slip into an ordinary life?

I remember a few years ago when Patrick Ness published THE REST OF US JUST LIVE HERE (Check out my review!). It was about the normal people living in a town where there is a Chosen One taking down evil incarnate on a weekly basis. I was fascinated to take a look at the other side.

I just...I don't know. I like looking at this trope from all angles, and I love that CHOSEN ONES deals with fallout.

Are you as excited as I am? Check out the reveal if you want to read the excerpt yourself, otherwise, keep scrolling to see the cover and book summary!

This is already one of my Most Anticipated Books of 2020!

Title: CHOSEN ONES
Author: Veronica Roth
Release Date: April 6, 2020
Publisher: John Joseph Adams / Houghton Mifflin

SUMMARY:

The first novel written for an adult audience by the mega-selling author of the Divergent franchise: five twenty-something heroes famous for saving the world when they were teenagers must face even greater demons—and reconsider what it means to be a hero . . . by destiny or by choice.

A decade ago near Chicago, five teenagers defeated the otherworldly enemy known as the Dark One, whose reign of terror brought widespread destruction and death. The seemingly un-extraordinary teens—Sloane, Matt, Ines, Albie, and Esther—had been brought together by a clandestine government agency because one of them was fated to be the “Chosen One,” prophesized to save the world. With the goal achieved, humankind celebrated the victors and began to mourn their lost loved ones.

Ten years later, though the champions remain celebrities, the world has moved forward and a whole, younger generation doesn’t seem to recall the days of endless fear. But Sloane remembers. It’s impossible for her to forget when the paparazzi haunt her every step just as the Dark One still haunts her dreams. Unlike everyone else, she hasn’t moved on; she’s adrift—no direction, no goals, no purpose. On the eve of the Ten Year Celebration of Peace, a new trauma hits the Chosen: the death of one of their own. And when they gather for the funeral at the enshrined site of their triumph, they discover to their horror that the Dark One’s reign never really ended.
