"I'm still grounded for doing potentially disastrous science without adult supervision, even though it wasn't actually my fault Wilnick almost blew up."
~Sanity, SANITY & TALLULAH

The first time I heard about SANITY AND TALLULAH by Molly Brooks was this past year at the 2018 Book Expo (BEA) in New York City. Disney Book Group graciously invited me to their BEA dinner, which was gorgeous. I was super nervous and had never been to anything like it!

There was a stunning wall full of posters featuring all of the authors in attendance that evening:

There was a speciality drink at the bar called the Plot Twist:

And every table hosted one of the authors in attendance. At my table, we would be seated with Molly Brooks, who had written a graphic novel entitled SANITY AND TALLULAH.

Every place setting had a menu card that, on the front, had a picture of the book from the author we were seated with:

During dinner, every author stood up and talked a little bit about their upcoming new release, including Molly Brooks:

You can find a full video of me chatting about the dinner, sharing pictures of the authors present, and the books Disney was featuring in the following video. Today, we're just focusing on Molly Brooks and SANITY AND TALLULAH!

Middle-grade graphic novels are a booming genre, and I haven't read nearly enough of them. After meeting Molly, I knew I wanted to read SANITY AND TALLULAH, though. It comes out next week on October 16th and will be one that all teachers and librarians should pick up for the classroom, one that all parents should buy for their kids. It is a great STEM book, and about two best friends. This is a book that will appeal to both genders and is full of fun and adventure. Also, there's a three-headed cat on the loose! ^.~

Sanity Jones is crazy smart. She managed to take old equipment and illegally create a kitten--albeit one with three heads, named Princess Sparkles, Destroyer of Worlds. She even genetically clones food for the kitten. Domestic animals are illegal on the space station, however, so Sanity and her best friend Tallulah need to keep her existence a secret. When Tallulah's mother discovers what Sanity has done, she confiscates the kitten. When the kitten escapes, nobody can find her--and now the station is having a lot of electrical system failures because something has been chewing on some very important cords.

Sanity and Tallulah don't believe that the damage is being caused by Princess Sparkles, Destroyer of Worlds, and want to figure out the mystery and find the kitten before the adults find her and remove her. But that's easier said and done. The fate of the faltering space station may be up to whether or not they can find the kitten before its too late and fix the problem!

Ahh, the story itself is hard to talk about without spoilers, so I won't. It's fun and kids will be on the edge of their seats waiting to see what Sanity and Tallulah may or may not find, and what fate has in store for Princess Sparkles, Destroyer of Worlds.

I really loved how smart Sanity is and the things that she can do that not even the adults can. She makes the most amazing functioning equipment, and knows how to fix things in a heartbeat. My best comparison is Raven from The 100, if only because I know a lot of you have watched it! I would love if this turned into a series and we saw more whip-smart inventions and save-the-day schemes from Sanity. We need more examples like Sanity for today's youth.

I had no clue what SANITY AND TALLULAH would be about going into it. I didn't even know it was sci-fi and took place in space! I also had no clue how whip-smart and impressive the characters would be. This is a book that would have absolutely flown past my radar if it weren't for Disney inviting me to their BEA Dinner and sitting Molly Brooks at my table. I'm so glad they did, because this book is a gem and I can't wait to recommend it to kids everywhere!

I didn't realize it would be a space book from the cover, but that's okay! It's still fun and vivid and bright! I also love that you see a kitten at the bottom of the cover--but you have no clue it's a three-headed cat until you start reading! I also love that Sanity is holding pliers, because it hints at her abilities and interests!

Title:  SANITY AND TALLULAH
Author: Molly Brooks
Release Date: October 16, 2018
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
SUMMARY:

Sanity Jones and Tallulah Vega are best friends on Wilnick, the dilapidated space station they call home at the end of the galaxy. So naturally, when gifted scientist Sanity uses her lab skills and energy allowance to create a definitely-illegal-but-impossibly-cute three-headed kitten, she has to show Tallulah. But Princess, Sparkle, Destroyer of Worlds is a bit of a handful, and it isn't long before the kitten escapes to wreak havoc on the space station. The girls will have to turn Wilnick upside down to find her, but not before causing the whole place to evacuate! Can they save their home before it's too late?

Readers will be over the moon for this rollicking space adventure by debut author Molly Brooks.
