Today, I am so incredibly honored and excited to be on tour for TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER, the brand-new book from legendary author Tamora Pierce.

In high school, Tamora Pierce was my favorite author in the entire world. Alanna and Daine and Kel were my GIRLS. I read those books again and again. Pierce's books were the only ones to initially come to college with me.

Pierce has had a fundamental impact on my life and my reading habits. I own every book she's even published, even her one-off White Tiger graphic novel and the anthologies she's featured in. I still recommend her to this day. If a book is recommended for fans of Tamora Pierce or blurbed by her, I will instantly add it to my TBR and purchase it the minute I can get my mitts on it. I've discovered SO MANY other amazing authors this way, including my beloved Kristin Cashore and Rae Carson. This genre is my favorite of all fantasy to read. There isn't anyone quite like Pierce out there. (Though Alex Lidell's under-appreciated THE CADET OF TILDOR brought Alanna-inspired tears to my eyes in all the best ways!)

If you've never read anything by Pierce, you don't necessarily NEED to read them in order. Each series stands on its own. But the characters bleed over into other series and build an elaborate world. I feel that reading the "Alanna" books (Song of the Lioness quartet) first is one of the best things you could do for yourself. I would follow that up with the "Daine" books (The Immortals quartet), followed by the "Kel" books (Protector of the Small quartet) before branching out into all of the other series. Pierce has two major worlds she plays in: the world of Tortall, where we meet all of these beloved characters, and the world of the "Circle" books, set in Emelan. While I love all of her books, the Tortall ones are my favorites. I read the Circle of Magic quartet first, and the back of the book led me to discover Alanna and Daine. From there, I was hooked!

Meeting Tamora Pierce and having her sign the first book in each of my
three favorite series by her is still a cherished memory!

One thing I've always loved about Pierce is the fact that she has always had a presence online--before it was something expected of authors. Her website always whispered secrets about books to come.

For the longest time, she has held out the promise of a book centered around Numair. For YEARS, I have waited and hoped and dreamed. This month, Pierce and her publisher Random House made all of my dreams come true by releasing TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER.

One of my favorite series ever created by Pierce was The Immortals quartet, centered around a girl named Daine who could talk to animals. One of my favorite characters in that series was Numair Salmalín. To read about his life when he was younger and explore what turned him into the man he's destined to become is a special, luxurious treat meant to be savored, not gulped in one go.

Where would Numair be without Daine!?

I have been longing to re-read all of my beloved Pierce books for the longest time, and TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER just makes me want to do that even more. As a reviewer, it's hard to work in books I want to read purely for pleasure, especially if I've read them previously. But my heart has been longing to do so for so long that I'm hoping 2018 is the year I reacquaint myself with all the ins and outs of Tortall.

What were your favorite series growing up? Did you love Tamora Pierce as fiercely as I did?

Tamora Pierce is a bestselling author of young adult fantasy books that break past the traditions of the fantasy genre to feature teenage girls as knights, wizards, and above all: heroes. A #1 New York Times bestseller and the recipient of the 2013 Margaret A. Edwards award, Tamora has written over 30 books, including the upcoming TORTALL: A SPY'S GUIDE (Oct. 31, 2017) and TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER (Feb. 6, 2018).

Tamora was drawn to books from a young age. Raised in rural Pennsylvania, the child of a "long, proud line of hillbillies," her family never had much. "We were poor, but I didn't know it then. We had a garden where my folks grew fruit and vegetables and our water came from a well," she explains. But one thing they did have was plenty of books. So Tamora read.

A self-proclaimed "geek," she devoured fantasy and science fiction novels, and by the age of 12 was mimicking her literary idols and writing her own action-packed stories. It was thanks to her father that Tamora began writing. "He heard me telling myself stories as I did dishes, and he suggested that I try to write some of them down," Pierce says.

But Tamora's novels had one major difference: unlike the books she was reading, her stories featured teenaged girl warriors. "I couldn't understand this lapse of attention on the part of the writers I loved, so until I could talk them into correcting this small problem, I wrote about those girls, the fearless, bold, athletic creatures that I was not, but wanted so badly to be."

Seventeen years later, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, a brief career in teen social work and some time spent writing for radio, Tamora Pierce held true to her childhood crusade, and published ALANNA: THE FIST ADVENTURE, the first in a quartet about a valiant, young, female warrior. Pierce's heroine struck a chord with readers across the country and quickly earned her a loyal following.

Now, with over 30 critically-acclaimed books to her name, Pierce lives in upstate New York with her husband Tim and their menagerie of nine cats, two birds, a flock of pigeons, various raccoons and squirrels, and one opossum. "It's a pretty good life, if I do say so myself. Struggling along as a kid and even through my twenties, it's the kind of life I dreamed of but never believed I would get. Yet here I am, after a lot of work, a lot of worry, a lot of care for details, and a massive chunk of luck, the kind that brought me such strong friends and readers. Pretty good for a hillbilly, yes? And I never take it for granted."
