 An Interview With
Amy Andelson & Emily Meyer

AUTHOR BIO:

Amy Andelson & Emily Meyer worked together for 10 years on  coming-of-age movies and TV shows such as Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List, Step Up 3D, and a contemporary adaptation of The Great Gatsby. LAYOVER is thier first young adult novel.

What was the inspiration for this story? Have either of you had any layover adventures?

We think best in motion, and came up with the idea for LAYOVER on a drive up the California coast. Unfortunately, we haven’t had any layovers quite as exciting as what Flynn, Amos and Poppy experience. But we have had some epic road trips…

Describe this book in five words (five for each of you).

Rebellious
Angsty
Heartfelt
Adventurous
Romantic

What made you want to take the leap from screenwriting to a YA novel?

We’ve been screenwriting for over ten years, and seen a lot of changes in the industry during that time. The coming-of-age films that inspired us to write weren’t get made any more, so we found ourselves with all of these movie ideas and nowhere to put them. We’ve always loved books and the process of adapting, and obviously read so much YA, so it felt natural to take LAYOVER and turn it into a book.

Were there any challenges in splitting a multiple POV story between the two of you? Did you share characters or did you each have a main voice you worked on?

It would be great if we had two different voices or different strengths and weaknesses, but the truth is we’ve been best friends and working together for so long, that we really have one voice on the page. We took turns alternating between POVs but at the end of the day, we never know who wrote what.

The theme of found family seems to be very important in LAYOVER. what does the idea of found family mean to you?

We feel so lucky to have found each other, and actually so many of the friends that are so close to us still when we were teenagers. It’s such a pivotal time in life, and you’re so influenced by the people that you meet, and the people that you love. We’re super close to our families so much and see them all the time, but it’s also amazing to have a “chosen” family of friends too.

Did you enjoy writing your debut novel? Can you see yourselves partnering on more YA novels in the future?

We loved the process of writing Layover so much, and are currently working on our next book -- stay tuned…

SUMMARY:

Flynn: At first we were almost strangers. But ever since I moved to New York, Amos was the one person I could count on. And together we were there for Poppy. (I mean, what kind of parents leave their kid to be raised by a nanny?) I just didn’t expect to fall for him—and I never expected him to leave us.

Amos: I thought I was the only one who felt it. I told myself it was because we were spending so much time together—taking care of Poppy and all. But that night, I could tell she felt it, too. And I freaked out—you’re not supposed to fall for your stepsister. So I ran away to boarding school. I should have told her why I was leaving, but every time I tried, it felt like a lie.

One missed flight was about to change their lives forever…. nbsp;
