Alex Lidell is an avid horseback rider, paramedic and ice cream addict. Born in Russia, Alex learned English in elementary school, where a thoughtful librarian placed a copy of Tamora Pierce’s ALANNA in Alex’s hands. In addition to becoming the first English book Alex read for fun, ALANNA started Alex’s lifelong love for YA fantasy books. Alex’s debut novel, THE CADET OF TILDOR, was an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards finalist. Her second book AIR AND ASH releases in May 2017.

Describe AIR AND ASH in 140 characters!

An incompetent crew. A cowardly captain. A mission she can’t fail. Sarah J Maas meets Master and Commander.

What sort of research went into writing AIR AND ASH?

Aside from the obvious answer of researching life in Nelson’s navy (which is the equivalent time period to Nile’s fantasy world), I needed to do some research in autism, epilepsy and asthma. The magic in my world has side-effects which, although not called by these names, embody common disorders. I needed to research, for example, what having a seizure might feel like.

Who has been your favorite character to write so far in the Tides series?

Hmm… I think Catsper is my fav to write. Though I love writing the tension between Nile and Domenic!

AIR AND ASH has had quite the journey to publication. Do you have any advice for writers taking a non-traditional route to publication?

Take the time to find the right editor for you and your book. The right editor is both highly knowledgeable and skilled AND communicates her vision in such a way that you are excited to work on the project. I had the pleasure of working with Mollie Traver and Linda Ingmanson on Tides and can’t imagine going into battle without them.

What sort of secrets can you whisper about the sequel? I think we're all happy there isn't a huge wait period between books! Do you think this will stay true throughout the series?

Tides was originally one book, but then I decided to add a lot more to the plot and the story became two full length novels - but the story arc continues through the two books. AIR AND ASH ends on a semi-cliff hanger but you can expect a solid ending in WAR AND WIND. As for Tides III, I only just decided that it will exist (yes, because there has been such an amazing response to AIR AND ASH and I love you for it), so it will take me awhile to get it together.

I love the way you changed the "Gift" of elemental magic and made it something much more dangerous, an affliction that can destroy a person. What inspired this aspect of the Gifted and how did you put it all together?

I like the idea of balance, so if someone’s body was going to be extra good at something, I wanted that balanced by a difficulty. My interest in medicine sparked the affiliation of medical condition to magical gifts - autism, epilepsy, hemophilia etc.

What sort of elemental ability would you want if you were Gifted?

I’m not telling. Because it is something you don’t discover until Tides 3 ^_^

What are some of your favorite books/movies set on the high seas?

Master and Commander, of course - but I’m sure you guessed that one already. I also like Under Enemy Colors. Oh, and though it is in space and not the high seas, I really like David Weber’s Honor Harrington books. Yes, she is in charge of a spaceship not a sailing ship, but a lot of similar principles apply in terms of character dynamics.
