I even met her in person at BEA once, and she's super nice, so I'm just so excited. Lenore Appelhans has already published two novels to date, THE MEMORY OF AFTER (Previously titled LEVEL 2) and CHASING BEORE. She's Blogger Royalty, and I'm so excited to host her!

I’m, like, such a murderer.

Pow! The scruffy man falls backwards from the chain-link fence and into the muddy grass with a thump. My ribcage rattles and I lower my rifle. It’s the one Daddy gave me for my sweet sixteenth, all wrapped up in a satiny pink bow. I can’t pinpoint exactly when Daddy’s motto went from the biblical Thou Shalt Not Kill to the survivalist Kill or Be Killed, but it might have been then.

This is not my first kill.

Joel and Bailey dash through the gate to drag the dead man away. Joel hefts him under his armpits, and the man’s dirty shirt rides up. He’s real skinny, this man. Daddy calls these ones grasshoppers. Because, you know, they played away the good times while all of us ants were working hard and stocking up on food to eat and water to drink and weapons to protect them both.

I’ve been assigned the role of sharpshooter ant. So, beware all ye grasshoppers.

Bailey grabs the man, the grasshopper, by his boots. Even from my perch on the roof I can see how totally worn out they are. His gross, blistered big toe pokes out of a massive hole. He must have lived through a lot, out there. Must have been desperate to climb our fence. But I can’t afford to think about that now. In the war of us versus them, my job is to make sure we win.

ABOUT...LENORE APPELHANS!

Lenore Appelhans is the author of two dark sci-fi novels, The Memory of After and Chasing Before, a short story collection called The Best Things in Death, as well the humorous picture book Chick-o-Saurus Rex. She will graduate with an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts in July 2016. Lenore loves to travel, so you can often find her on planes—at least until she learns how to teleport.
