The Prince and the Author:
A Character Interview
by Danielle E. Shipley

            “Hello, Danielle.”
I glance up from my laptop to find the Crown Prince of Denebdeor imagined just beyond the head of my bed. “Oh! Hey, Ionquin. What’s new?”
His mouth drifts up into a smile, his long body draping over the bed’s headboard. “ ‘The Surrogate Sea’s publication. Congratulations on your sixth Wilderhark Tale.”
I beam. “Thank you! I am most proud.”
He cocks his head. “Most proud of what?”
            “Pardon?”
“Of which aspect of the book are you most proud?” he rephrases.
Crown Prince Ionquin
“Oh. Heck, I haven’t thought about it. I mean, the cover drives me wild with its awesomeness, but that’s more my commissioned artist’s accomplishment than mine. As far as the story itself…” I ponder. “The complexity, maybe? I haven’t had this many plot threads to keep track of since ‘The Seventh Spell’. It wasn’t always easy, but methinks the payoff was a pretty heart-lurching epic.”
“An epic, eh?” says Ionquin, his gaze browsing my bookshelf. “You’ve come quite a long way from a sweet, simple little number like ‘The Stone Kingdom’.”
“That was an Edgwyn story,” I say of Book Two, with a shrug and a smile. “Your father’s the sweet and simple kind, and so lends himself to such tales. ‘Surrogate Sea’ deals with wilder elements – like, y’know, nature incarnate.”
“A whole new world,” Ionquin murmurs. “Which of the fantastic additions to the cast is your favorite?”
“Oh, gosh, that’s no kind of fair question,” I protest. “I’m in awe of them all! The gravitas of the forest, the cunning of the South Wind… even the couple of elements we only meet for one scene each are pretty fascinating, to my mind. But if I absolutely had to pick just one, you know it would be the Moon. Book Six may not center around him the way Book Five did, but if anything, he’s only gotten cooler.”
“If I were an element, what do you think I’d be?”
            “What is this, Twenty Questions?”
He laughs. “I’ve only asked three. Humor me.”
“Fine. You?” I study him. “Maybe you’d be a stream. Sliding at an unhurried pace down the path of least resistance.”
“Ouch.” His brows settle lower. “That’s not a terribly flattering description.”
“You asked for humoring, not flattery, Ion. And anyway, streams can be pretty.”
“Ah, well, then. At least I’m pretty. Highest Good knows that’s all a future king must be.” He pushes off from the headboard to stand upright, the crease between his brows grown more pronounced. “Is that all I am?” he wonders, half to himself. “Is that all I’ve become?”
“Not nearly all,” I promise him. “You just need a bit of a push, that’s all. A storm to swell your waters and force you against your boundaries. Good news for you: ‘Surrogate Sea’ comes with no shortage of storms.”
A rueful breath of a laugh. “This much is true. But you’re busy, and I’m being a bother. I’ll leave you in peace.”
“Thanks, Ionquin,” I say. My eyes on the place where he’s come and now gone, I wish under my breath, “And may you find the peace you’re restless for.”

Author: Danielle E. Shipley
Release Date: March 24, 2015
Publisher: Danielle E. Shipley

SUMMARY:

The Sea’s storm brought them together, and the Sea’s rules will keep them apart, unless the mute but melodious Muirigan can find another to take her place, freeing her to pursue the human man she loves. But when her plan collides with the schemes of the sly South Wind, a princess’s agenda to look for love in all the most fantastic places, and a prince whose head and heart have been long years at war, the result is a tragedy of errors from which the world might never recover.

THE SURROGATE SEA
Book Six of The Wilderhark Tales

An enchantress’s curse turns a spoiled royal into a beast; a princess’s pricked finger places her under a hundred-year spell; bales of straw are spun as golden as the singing harp whisked down a giant beanstalk – all within sight of Wilderhark, the forest that’s seen it all.

You’ve heard the stories – of young men scaling rope-like braids to assist the tower-bound damsel; of gorgeous gowns appearing just in time for a midnight ball; of frog princes, and swan princes, and princes saved from drowning by maidens of the sea. Tales of magic. Tales of adventure. Most of all, tales of true love.

Once upon a time, you knew them as fairytales. Know them now as Wilderhark’s.
