Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine
This event highlights our most-wanted upcoming releases!

Okay, so I'm featuring two modern day contemporary novels that have threads of The Little Mermaid running through them.

So...like mermaids or hate 'em, you may enjoy these two novels!

Title: DANCING ON KNIVES
Author: Kate Forsyth
Release Date: June 2, 2014
Publisher: Vintage // Random House

WHY?

I'm so anxious to finally read Kate Forsyth this fall when BITTER GREENS comes to the USA. It's really hard getting books from Australia!

Kate is awesome, and I always love working with her or talking to her online.

I think it's so cool that the main character in this book is inspired by The Little Mermaid, "Like the mermaid in the fairytale her Spanish grandmother once told her, Sara imagines she is Dancing on Knives, unable to speak. "

I want to read this and really hope it comes State-Side!

SUMMARY:

A damaged family and their generations of dangerous secrets

At twenty, Sara is tormented by an inexplicable terror so profound she hasn't left her home in five years. Like the mermaid in the fairytale her Spanish grandmother once told her, Sara imagines she is Dancing on Knives, unable to speak. She feels suffocated by her family, especially her father – the famous artist Augusto Sanchez – whose volcanic passions dominate their lives.

Then one stormy night, her father does not come home. His body is found dangling from a cliff face. Astonishingly, he is still alive, but the mystery of his fall can only be solved by the revelation of long-held family secrets.

At once a suspenseful murder mystery and a lyrical love story, DANCING ON KNIVES is about how family can constrict and liberate us, how art can be both joyous and destructive, and how strength can be found in the unlikeliest places.

THE SUMMER OF CHASING MERMAIDS
releases in June of 2015.

Title: THE SUMMER OF CHASING MERMAIDS
Author: Sarah Ockler
Release Date: June 2015
Publisher: Simon Pulse

WHY?

Like DANCING ON KNIVES, this one is inspired by The Little Mermaid (Even more so!).

The summary reminds me a bit of Alyssa Sheinmel's SECOND STAR, which takes the magic out of Peter Pan and sets the story in a contemporary world, only this time, the contemporary world is mimicking The Little Mermaid. Oh, you know I want to read this!!!!

SUMMARY:

Sometimes, there are no words…

The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.

Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.

Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.

When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . . .

What are you anxiously waiting for this Wednesday?
