Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.
Every once in a while I participate in this one when I either
1) Like the theme, and/or 2) Have the time!
This week's topic:
Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2013

Believe it or not, a lot of the authors I read this year weren't new to me!

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

This week, I'm reading a New-To-Me Author: Rainbow Rowell! I read her adult novel ATTACHMENTS this past summer and didn't love it (I struggle with epistolary novels), but I just finished ELEANOR AND PARK and am reading FANGIRL now. So this is a timely meme!

In no particular order...

1) MATTHEW DICKS

MEMOIRS OF AN IMAGINARY FRIEND had so many quotable moments!!! I read this during event season, so it never got reviewed, but it will. So good! It's a book that I picked up because it was blurbed by Jodi Picoult and on a lot of noteworthy lists, and then had to recommend to everyone. The POV is so unique and astounding! I need to read more books from him now, please!

2) SHERRY THOMAS

This was a great start to a fantasy series! It had all the elements I loved most, reminding me of other series I love while still managing to remain unique and original. I need a sequel NOW, please!
My Review

3) SOMAN CHAINANI

One of my favorite middle-grades of the year! The illustrations on that beautiful cover ALONE catch my eye, let alone the interior! If you're a fan of fairy tales, you need to read this. It's darker than other MG if you're hesitating due to its reading level. And? It totally turns stereotypes upside down and inside out! I love watching villains and heroes develop and embrace/accept their fate!

4) KATE DANLEY

One of my favorite fairy tales this year. It's darker, but a unique story not told before. I love the way Kate Danley brought fairy tales together and created a mesmerizing, haunting story. I'm sad the book isn't more well-known due to the smaller publicity scale!

5) TRISHA WOLFE

I read at LEAST four books by Trisha Wolfe this year, and participated in several blog tours, blitzes, and cover reveals to support her work! I even joined her street team and became a TuffGirll! My FIREBLOOD review is coming soon, and I'll have more in the new year!

6) SHERWOOD SMITH

I'd been hearing for a long, long time that if I enjoyed Tamora Pierce and Kristin Cashore, I'd love Sherwood Smith. I finally read her (And found out that she's a HER and not a HIM, as previously thought!) earlier this year after getting in the mood from fellow New-To-Me Author Alex Lidell! I can't wait to read more of her books!

7) ALEX LIDELL

I was excited to read THE CADET OF TILDOR because I love Tamora Pierce and her female knights. I loved that Alex managed to focus on different female difficulties. Women can train openly, but they're weaker and must overcome more obstacles. I loved this focus! I really want more books from Alex Lidell set in this world!
My Review

8) LENA GOLDFINCH

Lena Goldfinch delivered a great, unique fantasy world. I wanted to read her novels the moment I heard about them, and anxiously awaited for them to leave their Kindle-contract and be on nook, too! I have them all loaded up now, and will indulge in more of Lena's books in 2014!

9) MARCIA LYNN MCCLURE

I really liked Marcia's unique retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, one of my favorite fairy tales. I would love it if she wrote more fairy tales in the future. I would read another! She balances character relationships well and creates a story that's fun, fast, and easy to read when you just want a little HEA in your life!
My Review

10) RENEE COLLINS

Another unique fantasy that made me want more! This world...I can't even! It's a fantasy set in the Wild, Wild West. I've never seen a fantasy set in this historical time period before, and I ate it up. I want more and hope that RELIC sold well and that Renee Collins will put out sequels for me to love!

What authors are new to YOU this year?
Do we share any!? ^_^

Comments

  1. I was only able to come up with 9 most of the new authors I read this year I didn't enjoy, but there were a few gems that I couldn't get enough of. Rainbow Rowell is an author I want to try in 2014.

  3. Out of all of those new authors, the most intriguing one to me was the author of Relic. I can't imagine a Wild, Wild West meets fantasy book. That is pretty creative!

  7. I hope you love Fangirl as much as I did!! I haven't read E&P yet, but I'm planning on it... I'm just a little scared because of how much I loved Fangirl. I don't want my expectations to kill it.

  10. I haven't read anything from any of these authors, but The Woodcutter sounds intriguing. I love it when writers create something new from fairy tales. I'm glad to hear 2013 brought you so many good authors, and I hope 2014 does the same.

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

  11. I have Fangirl and Eleanor and Park in my shelves but I haven't read them yet. I guess I should work on that ;) I checked out Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend and added it to my TBR list ;) I am also interested in The Woodcutter :)

  12. You really made me want to read Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend. I just looked it up in my library catalogue to see if it was available and got a surprise. Yes it is there. But it seems that in the UK and Australia he publishes under the name Matthew Green! That's weird. Still, I've chucked it on top of my teetering TBR.

  13. Booo I've only read Sherwood Smith off this list! Although I totally agree - it is very Kristin Cashore/Tamora Pierce - like. Rainbow Rowell is #1 priority for me next year because everyone's been talking about how much they have loved all her books, so I need to get to this ASAP clearly!

  14. Lena Goldfinch sounds just like my cup of tea she may have to appear on my 2014 list! Check out my TTT here :)
