Christine O’Neil is one half of the happiest couple in the world. She and her handsome hubby currently reside in Pennsylvania with a four-pack of teenage boys and their two dogs, Gimli and Pug. If she gets time off from her duties as maid, chef, chauffeur, or therapist, she can be found reading just about anything she can get her hands on, from Young Adult novels to books on poker theory. She doesn’t like root beer, clowns or bugs (except ladybugs, on account of their cute outfits), but lurrves chocolate, going to the movies, the New York Giants and playing Texas Hold ‘Em. Writing is her passion, but if she had to pick another occupation, she would be a pirate…or, like, a ninja maybe. She loves writing fun and adventure-filled romance stories, but also hopes to one day publish something her dad can read without wanting to dig his eyes out with rusty spoons. Christine loves to hear from readers, so please feel free to get in touch with her via the Contact Page. Christine also writes adult romance under the name Christine Bell.

The Gods of CHAOS
by Christine O'Neil

Thanks so much for joining me on this stop of the Chaos blog tour! I’m very excited about the contest we’re running so make sure to stick around and enter to win some awesome prizes.

Today I thought we could talk about gods, a little about mythology and why I decided to make some of my semi-gods not so nice. First off, why gods? Short answer: Gods are frigging gangster, that’s why. Mythological gods are often cruel, self-serving and ruthless. They’d as soon smite you as look at you, and if you forget to worship them “properly”? Forget about it. Just ask Medusa. She got stuck with a head full o’ snakes and a face that turned people to stone. So it didn’t seem like such a leap for the descendants of the goddess of love to be a little less than loving. Even Aphrodite herself was pretty hardcore. She cheated on her husband Hephaestus pretty regularly, fought with Persephone over Adonis and caused some major mischief with the whole Helen of Troy thing (where, in order to bribe Paris to say she was the fairest of the goddesses, promises him the most beautiful mortal woman in the world as his wife, disregarding the fact that Helen of Troy was already married and subsequently starting the Trojan War). Bottom line? I felt like the gods were pretty brutal and bloodthirsty, so it only made sense to me that their descendants, once their blood was mixed with that of equally flawed humans, would be a mixed bag. Some good, some bad, most somewhere in between. And that’s what I wanted for my main character, Maggie.

Maggie is a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite many generations removed. She and her kind have sort of (well-deserved) bad reputation because, as kin to the goddess of love, they need it…crave it, and most of them steal it from other people to feed their need. Maggie fights it as best as she can, but it’s part of her genetic makeup in the same way that a vampire needs blood. Having this sort of battle within her between good and evil makes her a much more interesting and relatable character in my eyes. I could have made her a benevolent dream who sprinkled love juice on people when they were asleep and spread joy wherever she went. But who wants to read about that boring ass chick? And can we really relate to a picture perfect Mary Sue who’s so much less flawed than any of us could hope to be? So Maggie, like most of us, it kind of a hot mess. She’s a little neurotic, a lot snarky, she eats junk food and loves her friends and family and is loyal to a fault. She’s my flawed descendant of a goddess heroine and I hope you guys like her >.<

Thank you so much for such a great post, Christine! Now I want to read CHAOS even more after seeing the inspiration behind this unique mythology-infused novel!

O F F I C I A L   I N F O:

Title:  CHAOS
Author: Christine O'Neil
Release Date: August 19, 2013
Publisher: Entangled Teen Ember
SUMMARY:

My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly, when I lose my temper, my fingers become weapons of mass destruction. Turns out I'm a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I'm stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this annoying—and super-hot—guy all up in my business, I'm about to flip out.

But it gets worse. I just learned there's this watchdog council of semis who keeps an eye out for any bad apples. They think I'm the baddest of the bunch and want to take me out before I do any more damage. My nemesis Mac might turn out to be my salvation, only he's got secrets of his own...and they may just kill us both.
