Introduction to some of the species in LICHGATES
(Since so many of them are unique and original)
by S.M. Boyce

Hey there, beautiful people! I’m S. M. Boyce (call me Boyce)—fantasy author of the young adult Grimoire Saga. I’ve been invited over to chat about the creatures of my Grimoire Saga and to basically just give you an introduction to the core species that rule the hidden world of my series. There are many, many more; this is just scraping the surface. For any who haven’t read the series yet, here’s the book description to give you an idea of the world of the Grimoire Saga:

For any who haven’t read the series yet, here’s the book description to give you an idea of the world of the Grimoire Saga:

About Lichgates (Grimoire Saga #1)

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things—Ourea.

Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother’s recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book’s untamed power. Discovered by Ourea’s royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict—a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn’t trust anyone… but she’s being hunted and can’t survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn’t know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

Yakona

The six yakona races are masters of magic. They’re humanoid, for the most part, but each race looks drastically different from the last. Some have wings; others can breathe underwater. Still others can change form to look like any of the others.

Each of the kingdoms is run by a Blood—a king or queen who can control the will of his or her people through a connection called the “Blood Loyalty.” While yakona are devoted to their Bloods, they are slow to forgive and often hate yakona of other races. None of the kingdoms trust each other, and they hide their cities behind secret lichgates. If a traveling party of one race gets too close to that of another, one of those parties isn’t going to survive the encounter.

Though the yakona are imperfect creatures, they each have their strengths and beauty. I often have readers say they wish they could visit a yakona kingdom.

Drenowith

The drenowith are immortal shape shifters, and no one knows what their natural form looks like. They can become anything they imagine. It’s also said that nearly every major natural disaster is the result of a drenowith pushing his boundaries by trying magic he can’t control. Not much is known about these creatures except that they’re guardians of the Earth and, apparently, don’t care about much else.

Isen

Isen are humanoid soul stealers that remain young and relatively immortal as long as they steal a soul once a decade.  These isen have a barb in their right palm that can suck the soul from their victims, and stealing a soul gives the isen control over the person’s skills, knowledge, and even their body. The isen can change form at will, effectively enabling them to live the lives of their prey.

Vagabonds

When Kara opens the Grimoire, she becomes Ourea’s next Vagabond. That’s a special term reserved for the one who wields the Grimoire, but it originated from the man who wrote the Grimoire—a yakona with no Blood loyalty. It had never been heard of before, and his natural power landed him with a lot of enemies. Over his life, he always yearned to unite the kingdoms of Ourea… but that desire ultimately killed him.
The first Vagabond’s ghost lives in the Grimoire, and he offers Kara additional guidance throughout the series. The problem? He’s still on a quest for peace, and he’s determined to ensure that Kara succeeds where he fails—even if it comes at high costs to her.

To learn more about these creatures and the other species of Ourea, grab Lichgates (the first book in the Grimoire Saga). It’s free now for a limited time.
