The Flashlight Reader:
Top 5 Reasons to be a Mermaid

Flashlight ReaderAs a kid, I would spend hours playing “mermaids” in our pool with my friends. We went to great pains to describe how fantastic we would look as mermaids. (I always won that contest because I’m awesome like that.) But my eight-year-old self also focused on the aesthetic qualities of being a mermaid. My much older self can appreciate other perks of having a tail. (Life’s experiences tend to put things into perspective.)

So here is my much older self’s wise and sophisticated list of reasons for why being a mermaid would rock:

1. It’s acceptable to sunbathe topless at the beach, regardless of gravity’s effects on your body. You know that if you saw a mermaid lounging on the beach topless, your first thoughts would not be on her shells (or lack of). Just sayin’.

2. You can frolic in the surf without getting sand in the nether regions. If you’ve ever been in the ocean, you’ll appreciate this. No matter how hard you try to not get sand in your bathing suit, it always happens. No matter what. You’ll also know that sand in your suit isn’t so great either. Being able to play in the surf without fear of unintentionally exfoliating your skin raw is a huge bonus.

3. Even when you’re acting like a complete (sea) witch, people still find you amazing. Face it, in the water, sirens are fascinating and people are dying to meet them (har har) but it doesn’t have the same appeal on land. Act like a siren with two legs and you’re likely to be called something less appealing.

4. No one will notice you singing off key in the water. You can belt out the lyrics for “Bringing Sexy Back” at the top of your lungs and terribly off key without fear of breaking glass or making babies cry. The water tends to soften harsh sounds for delicate ears.

5. Free sushi for life! I don’t even have to explain how great that would be.

Mermaid lovers, don't forget to check out The Flashlight Reader if you're looking for another awesome blog to follow!

  2. Sand in the nether regions, oy. Not fun. I can also skip the sushi part but it would be fun to be a mermaid. This was a fun post, thanks.
