I have been excited for the release of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE GHOST ARMY by Alan Gratz with illustrations by Brent Schoonover ever since I saw the publication deal announcement splashed all over the internet -- and this is despite the fact that I've never read Alan Gratz or been a reader of Marvel Comics (Despite enjoying the MCU, I know, I know.). I instantly knew that so many kids would be freaking out with joy upon this book's release. New Alan Gratz releases sell out as soon as they hit bookshelves and go on an instant waitlist at libraries. Comic books are one of the literary market's most spectacularly selling genres at the moment -- it's a billion dollar industry right now and in 2021, surpassed fiction as the #1 seller. To have a book for middle school and high school readers that is not only a comic book based on one of their favorite movie superheroes written by an experienced historical fiction writer? Lightning in a bootle! I am so excited that this book releases next week and can't wait to see how many times it will bring joy to the readers picking it up.

Fans of Captain America will really enjoy THE GHOST ARMY, even if they're new to comic books and were introduced through the movies. The first Captain America movie is set during World War II, when Steve Rogers had his origin story and first became the beloved hero. The first Captain America movie features war and bravery in the face of battle, and introduces viewers to Steve Rogers, as well as what life was like during WWII. THE GHOST ARMY sits firmly during this time period. It even reflects on the injustice of US Japanese internment camps. Another amazing tidbit revealed in the book that readers may not even realize is based on reality comes when readers are introduced to a real-life WWII unit, the US Ghost Army, which author Alan Gratz better explains in this YouTube video (Complete with amazing photos) that I wish could have had a special section at the back of the book to learn more about these heroes so that readers would know they were real and not something made up for the story.

There was no better author choice than Alan Gratz, who has made a name for himself writing historical fiction -- I have found his most requested titles to be the ones that take place during WWII, so he is very comfortable writing in this time period and introducing aspects of the times to younger readers.

And of course, this is a superhero book, after all, so it isn't all war! What's a superhero without a supernatural enemy? And what could be better than an army of basically ghost zombies that can't be defeated through normal means? And what is a great Marvel adventure if it doesn't crossover with another Marvel franchise? Elements from the universe of Doctor Strange are present, though I won't say much in order to keep you on your toes and surprised (Though of course, Strange himself isn't alive yet so don't expect that as your surprise, lol).

Finally, what great Captain America tale is complete without mention of Steve Rogers' best friend Bucky Barnes? Bucky goes through so much trauma and evolves in many different ways over the course of the franchise, but because THE GHOST ARMY is set during origin times, Bucky is still just Steve's best friend and at his side on the battlefield. We don't see the two of these in action together enough, see the way their friendship tightens and grows fast in their youth. Having the two on the page together and seeing their dynamic is an instant must for fans of the franchise, or those who want to see more of the boy who eventually becomes the Winter Soldier.
