One of my favorite YA authors, Jodi Meadows, has a new book dropping on Tuesday entitled AS SHE ASCENDS. It is the sequel to last year's BEFORE SHE IGNITES and the middle book in the trilogy---but super action-packed!

YOU GUYS. If you love books like SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo and ROYAL BASTARDS by Andrew Shvarts, you NEED to pick this series up. NEED!

Today, I'm closing out the blog tour for AS SHE ASCENDS and thought it would be fun to introduce you to the world of the Fallen Isles!

When I lived in Japan, every prefecture was famous for one food. I thought about the way each island has its own unique god or goddess and what sort of food would be special to that nation!

So here is a guide to the Famous Food of the Fallen Isles: Where you should go to eat when traveling!

Thank you to Jodi Meadows and Tiffie van Bordeveld for some great information that helped me compile today's guide!

Tiffie also did a stunning map of The Fallen Isles:

Damina consists of two islands: Damyan and Darina. The islands are so close together that they are often blended into one island, Damina. They are ruled by Damyan and Darina the Lovers.

Come to Damina during the mid-winter Oyster Festival and walk away full and happy. It is said that oysters taste more delicious here than anywhere else, blessed by the Lovers as a sacred aphrodisiac. The festival lasts an entire week, but be warned: The birthrate in Damina is at its highest about nine months after this festival each year!

If you're looking for something that gives you energy and stamina, look no further than Khulan. Home of the famous Khulani Warriors, a lot of the food and drink the island imports is designed to heighten endurance. Khulan the Warrior blessed the land with plentiful barley, which is incorporated in many meals. Almond Barley Tea is a morning staple to start the day off strong, while warm Pearl Almond Milk with a special blend of nutmeg will lull you off to sleep!

©CulinaryHill --Vegetable Tortilla Roll Ups

Food is much plainer on Idris than other islands. Idris the Silent taught his people the power of silence, which carries over even to what they eat. Nothing crunchy, nothing that needs slurping, only foods that can be enjoyed in contemplative silence. Idris is especially well-known for its delicious Dragontail Rolls. Brimming with chunks of vegetables grown only on Idris, local goat cheese, and fresh-caught fish. Idris is also well-known for flavoring its food with spices to make up for the lack of texture compared to other islands--so make sure to have a lot of water on hand to quench the heat! The blend is rolled together in soft, flat breading that is nourishing without bringing attention to the person consuming the delicacy.

If you're looking for a tasty snack, you HAVE to come to Bopha's Market at starfall. Bopha the Shadow brings shadows where he goes, and his people use noorestones to light their cities and keep them luminescent. They've created a delicacy that is only served at night. The dish, called Falling Star, is a bowl of fruity balls that have glowing fibers that illuminate the night. The balls are frozen and when they are consumed, people exhale smoke in a dragon-like fashion. This chilling treat is like nothing else in the Fallen Isles!

Here's a video of this deliciously chilly treat:

©Fast Growing Trees --the Jackfruit

Harta the Daughter blessed her people with fertile farmland. There are many crops found only here, including the luscious Prickly Egg. The Prickly Egg is not actually an egg, but a fruit. It gets its name for its spiky texture and the fact that it grows as large as a dragon egg. It is a filling fruit that can be shared by the entire family and is served in several dishes on Harta.

(Seriously, it's HUGE:)

©Survivopedia -- "Prickly Pear Cactus"

Anaphora is a desert island ruled by Anahera the Destroyer. Its citizens reign over life and death and often craft something out of nothing. Much of their food has to be imported from other islands. They are, however, famous for their Rising Sun Cactus Fruit. While most cacti are tasteless, this one produces a fruity taste that is quite pleasant, and has enough water in it to be quenching. It is easy to grow in the desert and served in many meals.

Stop back next Thursday for a special guest post with Jodi discussing the islands and their gods, and look forward to my review on AS SHE ASCENDS later this month during Magic, Myth, and Mischief!

Author: Jodi Meadows
Release Date: September 12, 2017
Publisher: Katherine Tegen / HarperTeen

Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.

But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.

No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse.

Author: Jodi Meadows
Release Date: September 11, 2018
Publisher: Katherine Tegen / HarperTeen

Mira Minkoba is on the run with her friends after a fiery escape from the Pit, where she’d been imprisoned for defending the dragons she loves. And she wants answers. Where have all the dragons been taken? Why are powerful noorestones being shipped to the mainland? And did the treaty she’s been defending her whole life truly sell out the Fallen Isles to their enemies?

As her connection to the dragons—and their power—grows stronger, so does Mira’s fear that she might lose control and hurt someone she loves. But the only way to find the truth is to go home again, to Damina, to face the people who betrayed her and the parents she’s not sure she can trust.

Home, where she must rise above her fears. Or be consumed.

The second page-turning novel in Jodi Meadows’ Fallen Isles trilogy scorches with mysterious magic and riveting romance as one girl kindles a spark into a flame.
