O P E N I N G   H O O K:

MY FEET HAVEN'T TOUCHED dry land in one hundred and two days.
But they move assuredly along the planks of the Lady Luck, twisting and turning in steps that are as natural to me as breathing. I shuffle backwards as Captain Ilene's cutlass bears down on mine. The sea and wind are in my ears, the clash of steel in my blood. My sword sings in my hand and the captain's mouth is a grim line.
    I have her this time.

“If he speaks true and we could find the map...we'd be rich. We'd be invincible, able to rule the Eleven Seas. Pirate queens, the lot of us. That would show all of the men who thought women on board a ship would bring nothing but bad luck.”

~OVER RAGING TIDES

When I heard that Jennifer Ellision was launching a new series, I was really excited. I previously reviewed her debut trilogy: THREATS OF SKY AND SEA,  RIOT OF STORM AND SMOKE, and FALL OF THRONES AND THORNS. [The author has also stopped by to do a guest post on Elementals and the Elements as well as given a great interview if you want more great bonus features to whet your appetite!] If you're a fan of elemental magic and/or books featuring kingdoms with political struggles, this is really one series that you just can't miss out on picking up!

And her new series? IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LADY PIRATES. If you love books like DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING by Tricia Levenseller or THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig or AIR AND ASH by Alex Lidell, or even, to an extent, SIEGE AND STORM by Leigh Bardugo or my favorite book so far of 2018, TO KILL A KINGDOM by Alexandra Christo, you are going to LOVE this brand-new series!

Grace has grown up on ships and has been on the Lady Luck since she was seven years old. The Lady Luck may be a pirate ship, but it defies all tradition. This ship is manned solely by female pirates. Men are NOT allowed. It's a safe haven for women who have been manhandled by men in the past, as well as a dream-come-true for women looking to leave home, screw being a "proper lady," and live a more adventurous life. Grace has never known a life outside of sailing the Eleven Seas, and she's never wanted to. She's at home here and is now the ship's Quartermaster. When her mother is taken by the Mordgris, Grace wants revenge. She wants to destroy the underwater creatures who have stolen so much from her. She can find their home if she can get her hands on the Map of Omna, a mythical map that can reveal the location of any treasure. Her luck changes for the better when she saves two brothers who claim to know the whereabouts of the map. Even though men aren't allowed onboard the Lady Luck, exceptions are made for the duo, who will either bring the entire crew fame and fortune or lead to the crew's downfall...

I really enjoyed OVER RAGING TIDES. I didn't realize how thirsty I still was for another swashbuckling adventure after reading TO KILL A KINGDOM until I picked this up. The Map of Omna and its unique properties remind me of the unique map from THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE, another book I really enjoyed. The life at sea reminded me of AIR AND ASH and SIEGE AND STORM. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters after finishing the story and might just have to finally crack open my still-unread copy of DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING, which people have been telling me I'll love since I loved TO KILL A KINGDOM so much. It is the era of high tides and sea life and fruitful bounty, mateys!

Grace is a really engaging protagonist, very set in her ways and code of honor. She is a great Quartermaster and keeps the Lady Luck running smoothly. She has never questioned anything until now, and I can already tell that her development is far from over. She is also thirsting for revenge, and I'm really intrigued by the introduction of the Mordgris. They're not mermaids or sirens, but they have that feel to them. The creatures live underwater, but can shape shift and form the faces of your loved ones--and even sound like them. They're interesting and I'm excited to learn more about this new species.

Like Ellision's first series, some of the "big reveals" aren't stunning surprises if you've read carefully. I had two hunches reading this series starter, and one reveal has already paid off, while I expect the next to come in a future book. And where the first book ends? It's not an insane cliffhanger, but it is such a pivotal moment and the next book is going to be so different based on this final moment. I can't wait to see where Ellision takes us next. The journey has only just begun, and I'm already ready to go on another adventure with these characters!

I always like illustrated covers, and this one has such an interesting texture to it!

I really like that the image changes when you look at it and becomes something else!

I also think the title typography fits in well.

SUMMARY:

The pirate crew of the Lady Luck lives by many rules, but chief among them is this: they do not allow men on board.

That’s a rule that quartermaster Grace Porter is willing to break when a shipwrecked young nobleman offers her information of an omniscient map, stolen from his warship by an enemy vessel. Until now, the map was only the stuff of legend… but with its help, Grace may finally be able to hunt down the Mordgris, the sea monsters who stole her mother away from her.

Unfortunately, some members of her crew have other plans…

To find the map and face the Mordgris, Grace will have to confront her past, put the Luck between warring nations, and uncover treachery aboard the ship. And ultimately, her revenge and the destruction of the Mordgris will come at a hefty price: the betrayal of her crew.

Grace promised them they wouldn’t regret this.

She just isn’t sure that she won’t.
