VICIOUS by V.E. Schwab is the little novel that could. The novel itself has an origins story, which is really cool, since within its pages lies the origins story of roommates Victor and Eli. Schwab had been writing YA novels and was having some trouble with her publisher. She has talked extensively about the dark place she was in, and how she wrote this odd little novel for herself, never thinking anyone would want it. She was too down on herself after everything she had been going through, and when Tor Books bought and published this, her debut adult novel, she never dreamed about how her circumstances would change. VICIOUS is the book that catapulted Schwab into a new genre and brought her new fans. Now, Schwab is a best-selling author and just signed a million dollar deal for more books.

VICIOUS released in 2013. Next September, a full five years after its debut, Schwab and Tor are teaming up to release a sequel, entitled VENGEFUL, and the hype is already high as fans clamor to find out what happens next to the characters they've grown so attached to.

What I loved most about VICIOUS is that readers have to wade through a lot of gray zones, that nothing is black and white. What is a hero and what is a villain?

"The paper called Eli a hero. The word made Victor laugh. Not just because it was absurd, but because it posed a question. If Eli really was a hero, and Victor meant to stop him, did that make him a villain?"

On paper, Victor is absolutely a villain, while his college roommate Eli is a hero. However, all is not as it seems, and it might just be that Victor is more heroic while Eli is more deranged...or maybe on paper, they're both nuts. I loved all the dark matter and the way this book makes you think! I was really glad to hear that there would be a sequel, and I'm excited to return to this world and see where Schwab leads readers next.

But these words people threw around - humans, monsters, heroes, villains - to Victor it was all just a matter of semantics. Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them. Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.

VICIOUS explores two college roommates who decide to experiment on themselves to see if EOs (Extra-Ordinaries) truly exist, and in doing so, change the very foundation of their future. It rotates between the past and the present, giving readers the information they need to see how the lives of these two men collide and weave together. Will you find heroes or villains when you pick up VICIOUS?

Release Date: Sept. 24, 2013
Publisher: TOR Books

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?
