Jodi Meadows wants to be a ferret when she grows up and she has no self-control when it comes to yarn, ink, or outer space. Still, she manages to write books. She is the author of the INCARNATE Trilogy, the ORPHAN QUEEN Duology, and the FALLEN ISLES Trilogy (HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen), and a coauthor of MY LADY JANE (HarperTeen).

When I was young, I collected unicorns. And if we're being honest, I still sort of do, although I'm somewhat pickier now than when I was twelve. Aaaand even when I was in my teens. You can just imagine what a cool teen I was.

Real talk: I had unicorn posters. I had ceramic figurines. I had a blanket. I had notebooks. All with unicorns on them. (I actually thought this was a serious unicorn addiction until I met my first college roommate who had more Hello Kitty stuff than I realized existed in the entire world. Let's just be clear that I have never gone so far as to have a unicorn toothbrush.) Even now, when my name is taken on social media, I choose things like UnicornWarlord, which works great because no one else wants it. (Unlike my previous backup handle, UnicornPrincess, which everyone thinks is a fake email address so the amount of other people's junk I get is just . . . wow.)

So, I think you get the idea. I've always liked unicorns.

And, well, in BEFORE SHE IGNITES, Mira likes dragons. She may not have dragon posters on her wall, but that's only because her mother thinks it isn't classy enough for a girl of Mira's station. Mira does, however, actually have a dragon.

I've never had my very own unicorn.

The other thing I wanted to do with dragons in this world -- besides arrange for everything to go terribly wrong -- was for Mira and her friends to view dragons in the same way that kids in the real world view dinosaurs. As in, they know all these details about them. They can identify the different kinds and tell you what they ate, etc. I wanted to play with that amazement kids feel about these giant creatures, and I wanted it to be something girls and boys weren't necessarily expected to grow out of.

And that's how I began writing lists of different species of dragons, figuring out their habitats, what they hunt, how frequently they eat, how they breathe fire, and any special species-specific abilities they might have.

I came up with several right away, like the Drakontos raptus, which is the kind of dragon Mira has. But others, like the mimikus and ignitus, came later, as I needed a dragon to fill a specific role. And I fully expect more types to appear in books two and three, and even after I finish the series.

I can't wait to pick it up!

Thanks again for stopping by, Jodi! ♥♥♥

Author: Jodi Meadows
Release Date: Out September 12, 2017
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books // HarperCollins

Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.

But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.

No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse.
