{Guest Post/Giveaway} Top Ten Things to Know About Elementals and the Elements by Jennifer Ellision, Author of THREATS OF SKY AND SEA

Jennifer Ellision spent a great deal of her childhood staying up past her bedtime with a book and a flashlight. When she couldn’t find the stories she wanted to read, she started writing them. She loves words, has a soft spot for fanfiction, and is a master of the fangirl flail. She lives in South Florida with her family, where she lives in fear of temperatures below 60 Fahrenheit.
THREATS OF SKY AND SEA, a young adult fantasy, is her first novel.

Top Ten Things to Know About
Elementals and the Elements
by Jennifer Ellision

1)      Elementals can mess your day UP.

2)      Despite popular misconception, being a specific type of Elemental (or, as they're sometimes known, Adept) in Egria and the rest of the world of THREATS OF SKY AND SEA does not mean one has a particular sort of personality. Fire Torchers don't have quicker tempers than they would if they were Water Throwers.

3)      ...But it might mean that they lean toward specific interests. For example, Earth Shakers are likely candidates for a gardening hobby. In our world, they would have been totally jazzed about the seventies trend of pet rocks... and probably found it much easier to get their “pets” to do tricks.

4)      Elemental abilities are closely linked to Egrian mythology and religion.

5)      The idea of the classical elements of earth, air, fire, and water can be traced back to ancient cultures in Greece, Babylonia, and India. With some variations, they can also be traced back to ancient China, Japan, Tibet.

6)      Modern astrology still utilizes the four elements by dividing the twelve signs of the zodiac into the categories of earth, air, fire or water.

If you're into Elementals,
I highly recommend you check out...

7)      The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo- Grisha have powers over more than just the elements, though some do have power over water, fire, etc., etc. Plus, it's an utterly well-crafted and compelling series.

8)      Avatar: The Last Airbender- Elemental or “Bender” abilities are restricted by the countries that they come from. Only one person, Avatar Aang, possesses the power to wield all four elements and stop the ruthless domination of the Fire Nation and its Fire Lord. Great characters, story growth, and fantastic world-building.

9)      The Legend of Korra- A sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender, focusing on the new Avatar (Korra) and featuring more ass-kicking women, steampunkery, and fun. The series is fun on its own, but its great for fans of A:TLA to see how the world has progressed and to get sneak peeks at how the characters in A:TLA grew up.

10)  Sailor Moon- And I mean Sailor Moon in all of its many incarnations (anime, live-action, musical, manga, reboot anime...). I will extol the virtues of Sailor Moon until the day I die. Though many of Sailor Moon's roots come from Greek and Roman mythology, there are definitely Elemental aspects to it. We see that through the powers of some of the Sailor Senshi. Throw that in with a “miracle romance,” amazing female friendships, and Sailor Moon just has a magic all its own.

  1. Weirdly, I've only read a few books that involved paranormal with the elements but I've enjoyed them immensely so I think I really need to try this one out. Thanks for being on the tour, Bonnie! :)
