Inside Cress’s Black Folder
by
Marissa Meyer

When I first started working on The Lunar Chronicles, I created a black folder for each book in the series, where I would stash random research and story notes and inspirational articles when I found it. (This was before Pinterest was a thing.)

Today—for the first time—I’m allowing a peek into one of those folders, in celebration of Bonnie’s Rapunzel Week. Keep an eye on my blog in March to see some of the pieces collected for CINDER and SCARLET! http://www.marissameyer.com/blog

1. A magazine ad that became my photo inspiration for Cress—sans Rapunzel-length locks. Cress doesn’t have nearly this much fashion sense, but I love this girl’s freckles and dreamy smile.

2. An article from Self magazine describing the Camp Pendleton Mud Run, a 10K in which contestants cross rivers and scale six-foot walls—blindfolded!—with the help of a partner.

3. Printed maps of the Sahara Desert and Egypt, including my hand-written notes of where the characters end up and how long it would take to travel between destinations.

4. Revision notes (I’m thinking this would have been for the third draft), including hatchmarks in which I count down how many chapters I’ve completed. It’s always motivating to have that visual representation of your progress.

5. Some of my earliest brainstorming notes for the book! These are from way back when Captain Thorne was still named “Woods” (after the Woodsman in Little Red Riding Hood).

Some favorite notes:

“Everyone goes back to outer space.”

and

“Woods comes to brothel and acts like a customer.” (HAHAHA, I’m sure he does! For the record, this is no longer relevant to the story. Poor Woods/Thorne.)

and

“In general, need more fear mongering of Levana.”

I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into my little black folder, and I really hope you’ll love Cress!!

Thank you so much for such a great post, Marissa!
I always love your behind the scenes looks at how you put your amazing series together!
I'll be stalking your blog in March for a peek at more of your black folders! ❤

O F F I C I A   I N F O:

Title: CRESS
Author: Marissa Meyer
Release Date: Feb. 4, 2014
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan
SUMMARY:

Rapunzel’s tower is a satellite. She can’t let down her hair—or her guard.

In this third book in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker—unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only ones who can.

  1. Brb, forever imagining Thorne's disappointment that he didn't get to play the role of a brothel customer, haha.

  2. This is awesome that she was able to share this. I think editing is the hardest part of writing. I love writing the original draft, but after I get through that I lose all motivation. I'm not meant to be an author I just write for enjoyment, but the visual representation is a good idea.

  3. I love when author's share research/early draft info of books. It is so fun to see thought processes and changes occur. The Thorne/Woods comment was pretty funny.

    Also, that comb? Beautiful.

  4. I love the Lunar Chronicles and someday hope to write my own books. It is inspiring and exciting to be able to see the process through which other authors go through. It's amazing how a whole book can begin from a couple pages of notes.

  5. I loved Marissa's post! All the notes are so interesting. Especially Woods/Thorne! The Rampion poster is so cool!

  7. :) This is fantastic! I love looking at author's 'folders' for their novels. Another author I love reading would post her random doodles in the margins of her manuscript as well as her notes. Thank you for sharing this with us, Marissa!

  9. It is always so interesting to see where authors get their inspiration from. It looks like the answer is everywhere! Lol!

  10. I love the idea of keeping little tidbits in a folder that you can always go back to. Like Pinterest, yes, but more physical. Totally seems like something I'd do too!
Ooh, I didn't know Thorne used to be "Woods"! That's cool! I do think Thorne fits him a little better, though :)
“In general, need more fear mongering of Levana.” That line made me laugh. I think Levana has the fear part of her reign down pat!
Thanks Bonnie and Marissa for sharing this stuff! So fun to see :)
