Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. |
Hi Bookworms!
For our first WoW of 2020, I wanted to pick a book I was desperately excited for, but also a book that published pretty soon. I often post these right after cover reveals, right as I'm discovering them/renewing my excitement for them/etc, and the book is 6 months+ away. I waned something we could ALL be immediately excited for today, so I chose a book coming out next month that I heard about a couple of months ago when Erin Morgenstern (!!!!!!) recommended it on Twitter.
I'm going to use this as another opportunity to talk about how much I love @KellyBraffet's THE UNWILLING (Feb 2020). I was lucky enough to read it in July & I still think about it almost every day. I'm probably going to read it again before February. (Happy Birthday, Colin!) https://t.co/nhP7aHQIbr— erin morgenstern (@erinmorgenstern) September 4, 2019
Are you ready?
I chose:
THE UNWILLING by Kelly Braffet comes out February 11th.
It is pitched as being, "For fans of S.A. Chakraborty's City of Brass, Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicles, and George RR Martin’s The Game of Thrones, this high concept medieval/high fantasy by Kelly Braffet is a deeply immersive and penetrating tale of magic, faith and pride."
It has been pitched by Erin Morgenstern, author of THE NIGHT CIRCUS and THE STARLESS SEA, who states, “Kelly Braffet is extraordinary... Familiar yet entirely unique, The Unwilling is the sort of story that seeps under your skin and pulses there, intimate and vibrant and alive. Fantasy at its most sublime."
Morgenstern even tweeted recently that it was one of her Top Reads of 2019:

If that isn't enough excitement, when I read the press and publicity packet for this one online, I saw a little blurb mentioning that her father-in-law Stephen King will be helping to promote the release. The book has a STARRED Review from Booklist, and also has blurbs from Kat Howard (AN UNKINDNESS OF MAGICIANS), Gwenda Bond (STRANGER THINGS, and Kelly Link (GET IN TROUBLE).
This is not Braffet's first novel, having previously written dark suspense novels SAVE YOURSELF, LAST SEEN LEAVING, and JOSIE & JACK. It is, however, "Kelly Braffet's classic fantasy debut, is a long-time passion project and a departure for the author otherwise known for her critically reviewed dark suspense."
Are you ready for a summary of this book so that you, too, can have an insufferable case of grabby hands?

“Fantasy at its most sublime.”—Erin Morgenstern, NYT bestselling author of The Night Circus
A penetrating tale of magic, faith and pride…
The Unwilling is the story of Judah, a foundling born with a special gift and raised inside Highfall castle along with Gavin, the son and heir to Lord Elban’s vast empire. Judah and Gavin share an unnatural bond that is both the key to her survival…and possibly her undoing.
As Gavin is groomed for his future role, Judah comes to realize that she has no real position within the kingdom, in fact, no hope at all of ever traveling beyond its castle walls. Elban—a lord as mighty as he is cruel—has his own plans for her, for all of them. She is a mere pawn to him, and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
But outside the walls, in the starving, desperate city, a magus, a healer with his own secret power unlike anything Highfall has seen in years, is newly arrived from the provinces. He, too, has plans for the empire, and at the heart of those plans lies Judah… The girl who started life with no name and no history will soon uncover more to her story than she ever imagined.
An epic tale of greed and ambition, cruelty and love, this deeply immersive novel is about bowing to traditions and burning them down.
