This week's topic:
Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Mysteries

This week's Top Ten Tuesday lent itself perfectly to our Got A Clue? Mystery Week! Now Bonnie and I usually survive on a book diet composed heavily of fantasy and adventure, but we both like to sample exotic literary flavors outside of comfort zones.

And it's hard to go through life without ever having picked up a good mystery book.

In no particular order, here is a compilation of my Top Ten All Time Favorite Mystery Books!

1)NATE THE GREAT by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat

                              Nate the Great

I have vivid and nostalgic memories of reading this series when I was younger. It was my first taste of the mystery genre, and when I solved the day to day mysteries with Nate I felt like a superhero. It made me want to solve the seemingly small mysteries that happened in my own world too!

2) THE BABYSITTER'S CLUB MYSTERIES by Ann M Martin

Stacey and the Missing Ring (Baby-Sitters Club Mystery, #1)

I'm showing my age here, but The Babysitter's Club was my life when I was younger.  These mysteries sucked me in, filled with characters I was already familiar with, which kept my attention longer than a lot of Detective style mysteries.

3) THE WESTING GAME by Ellen Raskin

                                            The Westing Game

It's my opinion that it's pretty much sacrilegious to compile a mystery list that doesn't include THE WESTING GAME. I had to read it for school one year, and dragged my feet thinking I'd be so bored. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. This book changed my entire perception of what the mystery genre could be.

4) THE SISTERS GRIMM by Michael Buckley

The Fairy-Tale Detectives (The Sisters Grimm, #1)

This series is a perfect mashup of mystery AND fantasy and adventure. Add in the fact that it wraps around stories and characters we already know and you have a great middle-grade reading experience. I can honestly say this series made me remember that I liked mysteries.

5) WHEN YOU REACH ME by Rebecca Stead

                                           When You Reach Me

This is a great non-traditional mystery, full of enigmas and a burning desire to unravel the question the main character is answering. I always knew about this book, but I didn't read it till about four years ago, and it was immediately apparent why it won a Newbery Award.

6) PAPER TOWNS by John Green

                                           Paper Towns

I was late to the John Green party. By the time I got on board everyone was all about THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and I didn't even realize how many other books there were until PAPER TOWNS caught my eye. It's intriguing, touching, and the mystery of it all kept me on the edge of my seat the 8 hours that it took me to read it.

7) CONFESSIONS OF A MURDER SUSPECT by James Patterson

Confessions of a Murder Suspect (Confessions, #1)

I'd seen mysteries for kids, mysteries for adults. The Confessions series by James Patterson is a great detective series for teens with  a very intriguing modern edge. It's my second-favorite James Patterson series, only to be outdone by The Maximum Ride books.

8) GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn

                                            Gone Girl

This book reminded everyone that psychological thrillers are just as amazing as a detective story, or a good old-fashioned whodunnit. For people who don't like the traditional definition of the mystery genre, this opened up a whole other door.

9) THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larson

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1)

I think what I love most about this book was how I couldn't decide whether I'd categorize it as a psychological thriller or a crime mystery. There are elements of both throughout, and perhaps in the end, it's a hybrid of everything I love about both styles of mystery.

10) THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES by Arthur Conan Doyle

The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sherlock Holmes, #5)

I will admit that I am not a huge fan of most of the Sherlock Holmes books. It's not that I dislike the storylines or the character of Holmes himself, but alas, I never manage to quit get into the narrative style. Except for The Hound of the Baskervilles. I loved this book in middle school, in high school...I still re-read it now.
