Next week marks the launch of UNFORGOTTEN, the second book in Jessica Brody's amazing trilogy that began with UNREMEMBERED!

Tomorrow, Jessica Brody stops by for an awesome interview and will reveal a SECRET from the series that you'll only see here!

I've previously reviewed three other books by Brody:
THE KARMA CLUB, MY LIFE UNDECIDED, and 52 REASONS TO HATE MY FATHER
These are all pure contemporary, while the Unremembered trilogy is much more sci-fi!

O P E N I N G   H O O K:

THE WATER IS COLD AND RUTHLESS, lapping against my cheek. Slapping me awake. Filling my mouth with the taste of salty solitude.
I cough violently and open my eyes, taking in the world around me. Seeing it for the first time. It's not a world I recognize. I gaze upon miles and miles of dark blue ocean. Peppered with large floating objects. Metal. Like the one I'm lying on.
And then there are the bodies.

UNREMEMBERED is a fast-paced novel that's hard to put down until you know all the details. While it does have a bit of predictability, it's still fun to find the answers, and the back-half of the novel is really hard to put down. The Unremembered trilogy is also a big change for Brody, whose previous novels were all pure contemporary. While UNREMEMBERED still takes place in a modern world, it has a lot of sci-fi elements later on that propel the series into a brand-new category (Especially in UNFORGOTTEN!).

The story revolves around the lone survivor of a plane crash, a teenage girl who doesn't remember her prior life. She has a severe case of amnesia, forgetting even simple things such as TV, grocery stores, and even slang. She remembers and understands numbers, though. Counting comforts her in a way that nothing else does. Is this a memory of her previous life, a hint of her favorite subject in school? Everyone calls her Violet because of the unusual color of her eyes. She trusts no one, having been told that everyone seeking her out and claiming to know her is just an opportunist trying to snag five minutes of fame. This even extends to the mysterious boy who claims that he knows her, that her name is Seraphina. Violet's lack of memory is dangerous, because there are people willing to kill her, people who will do anything to retrieve her. Will she remember who she is and what she's running from before it's too late?

Jessica Brody does a good job capturing a girl without any memories, taking it even further and creating a new environment. What must it be like to awaken each day remembering...nothing? This is a subject of fascination that has led to a wealth of novels, movies, etc. with such characters. Violet's situation is much more unique, and as answers are revealed, the novel takes on a new twist that will be a launching pad for the rest of the series. It's really hard to talk about this one without spoilers, since there's an air of mystery for a large chunk of the novel. But there's romance, danger, and adventure, and it's easy to read each book in one sitting! The series really opens up in UNFORGOTTEN, and I can't wait to see where Brody takes us when the final book comes out in 2015.

C O V E R   D E S I G N:

I like the blurriness of the cover. It's very fuzzy and distorted. This is how the main character feels through much of the novel. She doesn't know who she is, doesn't even recognize herself in the mirror. Her memories are just...gone. I really like the way the theme of amnesia made its way onto the cover. It will make you do a double-take at the store, because it's the opposite of every other cover. No crisp images here!

Title: UNREMEMBERED
Author: Jessica Brody
Release Date: March. 5, 2013
Publisher: Farrar, Straus, & Giroux/Macmillan
Received: For Review
SUMMARY:

When Freedom Airlines flight 121 went down over the Pacific Ocean, no one ever expected to find survivors. Which is why the sixteen-year-old girl discovered floating among the wreckage—alive—is making headlines across the globe.

Even more strange is that her body is miraculously unharmed and she has no memories of boarding the plane. She has no memories of her life before the crash. She has no memories period. No one knows how she survived. No one knows why she wasn’t on the passenger manifest. And no one can explain why her DNA and fingerprints can’t be found in a single database in the world.

Crippled by a world she doesn’t know, plagued by abilities she doesn’t understand, and haunted by a looming threat she can’t remember, Seraphina struggles to piece together her forgotten past and discover who she really is. But with every clue only comes more questions. And she’s running out of time to answer them.

Her only hope is a strangely alluring boy who claims to know her from before the crash. Who claims they were in love. But can she really trust him? And will he be able to protect her from the people who have been making her forget?

From popular young adult author Jessica Brody comes a compelling and suspenseful new sci-fi series, set in a world where science knows no boundaries, memories are manipulated, and true love can never be forgotten.
~*~

Jessica Brody knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. She started self "publishing" her own books when she was seven years old, binding the pages together with cardboard, wallpaper samples and electrical tape.

After graduating from Smith College in 2001 where she double majored in Economics and French and minored in Japanese, Jessica later went on to work for MGM Studios as a Manager of Acquisitions and Business Development. In May of 2005, Jessica quit her job to follow her dream of becoming a published author.

In four short years, Jessica has sold nine novels (two adult novels to St. Martin's Press and seven young adult novels to Farrar, Straus, Giroux.)
