Cover Crazy: BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY by Jaclyn Dolamore

For two weeks, come celebrate mermaids, whether it’s winter or summer where you live. Splash into Summer runs from June 28th to July 12th. There will be author interviews, guest posts, giveaways, reviews, and more! Now is the time to celebrate mermaids, especially with so many new novels about them coming out.

Cover Crazy is hosted by The Book Worms. Each week, bloggers "admire the art and beauty of a book’s design, so I’m going to post minimal words. It is up to you to write how you feel and what you like about it the way you’d like to."

Why I Love This Cover:

Does this cover not scream MERMAID to you? Love, love, love! The cover’s atmosphere is really great. I like the way the cover is airy and foamy in tone, not the standard fare of most mermaid covers. Since I know there’s a winged race of people in the novel, I can’t help but wonder if that also plays a part.
And the font! I need to find out what font that is (unless it was created especially for this book). I covet that B. I WANT that B!!! How amazing is it?

And now, an extra special treat for all my mermaid lovers:

From Concept to Cover:

A couple weeks ago, I was playing around on Deviant Art looking for mermaid stock images so I could make my Splash into Summer banner. (As you can see, I couldn’t find anything that truly called to me and designed my own instead, but that’s another story…) While puttering around, I stumbled across THE LITTLE MERMAID by VKAcademy. It looked...familiar. Like, so familiar I pulled up the cover for BETWEEN THE SEA AND SKY by Jaclyn Dolamore to take a peek. Lo and behold, this is the image that forms the book’s final cover:

The cover designers contacted the artist for use of the image, then tilted the image so that it was a different angle (Which changes the appearance a LOT more than you might expect it to; Small Review mentioned this recently when doing a feature on the cover design for TIGHTER by Adele Griffin). The image was also cleaned up—More air here, less bubbles there, changing the wave pattern, etc.

I love seeing images go through the design process. How about you? What cover are you crazy about this week?

  1. That's so cool! Nice find! I love seeing cover processes. It really is amazing to see how just a slight tilt can chance so much about a picture. Here it really opens everything up. It seems like her face is much clearer in the book cover.

  2. I really enjoy this cover. It's almost breathtaking. It's a perfect fit for a mermaid story. What's weird though is I think I'm drawn to the original photo more than the cover. The colors seem to stand out more for me.

  3. I really like this cover to. The colours are beautiful, they definitely scream summer to me. I like how it’s almost as if she is emerging from the barrel of a wave, it’s very subtle, can you see it? I agree, the B is pretty amazing too, lol. Thanks for sharing! (my CC)

  4. @Small: Isn't that awesome? I was shocked and amazed by my find! I love seeing how the cover changed. Just a little bit does so much! It reminded me of your awesome TIGHTER feature so *of course* I had to share that link!

@Gina: Isn't this cover lovely? I was so surprised to see that it came from DA! I miss the bubbles from the original image!

@Alisa: Aren't the covers lovely? They look just right! I agree, it looks like she's emerging...into the air or onto land, maybe? That B is so aweeeeeeeeesome! *wants*
