The Psyche of a Gabriel Hound
by Stacey O'Neale

Gabriel, hell, or yell hounds are common creatures in Welsh, English, Saxon, and Celtic mythology.  They are typically associated with the Wild Hunt. During the hunt, they punish criminals or bring people to the underworld. When they yell, it's supposed to be an omen. In most mythology, they are closely associated with death. Some are shape-shifters, while others remain in their dog-like animal form.

In the Mortal Enchantment series, gabriel hounds are created by the original queen of the fire court, Prisma. Unlike other fire elementals, Prisma created them using her own blood. While standing within the eternal flame, she cut her arm and let the droplets join with the flame. From the blood and fire, the hounds were born. Since then, the hounds are born the traditional way all dogs are born.

A hound has a mortal form until he or she turns what elementals consider an adult—sixteen. Sometime around their sixteenth birthday, they go through their first shift. When they transform, it's extremely painful. As they get older the pain lessens, but it's never painless. Hounds are not considered full members of the fire court because they do not have the ability to control fire. Instead, they are the strongest of all the elementals. Because of their strength, they are used as guardians to high-ranking fire elementals. The ones who aren't chosen to be guardians are made into slaves. They work in the castle and in the homes of high-ranking elementals as cooks, cleaners, etc.

Although they are considered lesser ranking fire elementals, they do have a pack leader. Darius—Marcus's father—is their current pack leader. He is also Prisma's guardian. As far as personality goes, gabriel hounds are raised to be vicious creatures. It's part of their guardian training. It's not uncommon for them to be called to fight one another to the death. During Prisma's reign, this was an activity she very much enjoyed. It's one of the many reasons the other fire elementals don't see them as equal members of their court.

Title: FRAGILE REIGN

Author: Stacey O'Neale
Release Date: November 25, 2014
Publisher: Phoenix Reign Publishing
SUMMARY:

It’s been a week since all hell broke loose…

Rumors of King Taron’s weakened powers have left the air court vulnerable. Kalin is desperate to awaken her akasha powers, except she doesn’t know how. Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. To solidify her position, the council has advised her to marry Sebastian—a high ranking air elemental she’s never met and her betrothed.

Will Kalin sacrifice her relationship with Rowan to strengthen her court?

Rowan and Marcus return to a fire court in turmoil. Liana’s death has fueled the fire elementals’ distrust against the air and woodland courts. The unbalanced elements have set off natural disasters all over the mortal world. Rowan takes the throne to restore balance, promising to unite the fire court. But not all elementals are happy with his leadership. Many are secretly loyal to Valac, which means Rowan needs to find allies for his cause.

Can Rowan unify the court of fire before the elements destroy the world?

Sharing some AMAZING book deals I found!

Hey bookworms!

Since we all love books, I thought I would share my great find of the week with you and introduce you to some new books you might not have heard of.

My mom and I were at a local warehouse store selling remainder books for $1.99 a pop and picked up some stuff that I've been wanting to read for a while!

I'll show you the titles in a second.

First, I want to also share some deals with YOU! If you have an e-reader, there are so many books on sale today, and I'm hoping to see more this week for the holiday, too. I'm sure Kindle has the exact same deals, but I'm seeing them on BN.

BN is having a Teen Blow-Out, with up to 80% off certain titles! There are some great ones, too, like CRUEL BEAUTY, GRAVE MERCY, THE WINNER'S CURSE, SHADOW AND BONE, STITCHING SNOW, THESE BROKEN STARS, and THE BONE SEASON!

There's also a great Kid's Best Seller sale, with titles such as Harry Potter, KINGDOM KEEPERS, THE GIRL WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND, THE LAND OF STORIES, TUESDAYS AT THE CASTLE, and PRINCESS ACADEMY.

There aren't special landing pages for the adult categories that I've found, but it doesn't mean there aren't some great deals to be had!

And now, on to my loot. Between my mom and myself, we spent $25 and snagged 13 books!!! (One of my mom's books was 99¢, but everything else was $1.99 each!

My books are on the left, and hers are on the right. (And yes, you're also seeing fantasy on the left and paranormal on the right. That shows our different tastes right there!)

Here's a closer look at my titles:

I'll link these to Goodreads for if you want to see summaries!

·     o     A PEARL AMONG PRINCES by Coleen Murtagh Paratore
o     I remember seeing this one at a bookstore, but I hadn't been sure I wanted to spend the money for it in hardcover since it was so thin and sounded a little young. And then...I forgot about it! ^^;;

·    o      RELIC MASTER: THE HIDDEN CORONET by Catherine Fisher
o      I have the first two in this series, but never got around to buying 3 and 4, and then they went out of print. They're out again as an omnibus, but I wanted the hardcovers b/c when you remove the jackets, turn them inside out, and put them together, they make this cool map:

·    o      RELIC MASTER: THE MARGRAVE by Catherine Fisher
o      Again, I have the first two in this series, but never got around to buying 3 and 4, and then they went out of print. They're out again as an omnibus, but I wanted the hardcovers b/c when you remove the jackets, turn them inside out, and put them together, they make the above cool map!

·     o     FOX AND PHOENIX by Beth Bernobich
o   I remember hearing really cool things about this book and wanting to read it! I may have even had an ARC from Netgalley once upon a time. Either way, it never happened, and then I sadly forgot. But I'm eager to read it all over again!

·    o      THE SPY PRINCESS by Sherwood Smith
o   I really enjoyed reading the Crown and Court Duology from this author, and am eager to read more books from her, so for $1.99, why not take a chance!?

·    o      SUMMER AND BIRD by Katherine Catmull
o   I remember seeing Misty from The Book Rat feature this and thinking, "What a pretty cover!" But I never got around to picking it up and reading it. I cant' remember if it's based on a fairy tale, or if it just has the feel of one, but either way, I remember wanting to read it!

That's everything I found and picked up yesterday. I was thrilled with the hunt, and couldn't wait to squeal to fellow book friends who get it!

Have a safe and happy holiday this week if you're celebrating, and please, if you're heading out Black Friday, be EXTRA safe!!!

Excerpt from FRAGILE REIGN

Rowan
After Marcus left, the lack of sleep and overuse of my power had finally caught up to me. My lids were heavy, making it hard to keep my eyes open. I laid down on the nearest bed, sinking into the softness of the vanilla scented pillows. I could rest here until tomorrow, and then meet Kalin on the beach at sundown. As I closed my eyes, I imagined her in that sexy sundress with the ocean breeze wafting through her red curls. My lips tingled remembering the raspberry taste of her kisses. With all this craziness going on, she was the one thing that made sense. The only person who could make me forget about everything for a little while. Kalin was the one I wanted. The only one I needed. I shook my head. What was wrong with me? It was too soon to be thinking about this stuff, right? It had only been a few weeks. And what did I know about real feelings, anyway? Had it not been for Marcus, I would never even know what it felt like to care for someone. Love was never part of my life. My mother thought love was a weakness—a totally worthless emotion compared to power and control. But that still didn’t explain how I was feeling. Why everything seemed better when Kalin was around. Why my fingers ached to touch her. Why her pain shattered me to the core. I put my hands over my face. Or, maybe the lack of sleep was making me delusional. With a smirk, I gave in to the darkness that was overwhelming me and fell asleep.

Top Fifteen Books On My Winter TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.
Every once in a while I participate in this one when I either
1) Like the theme, and/or 2) Have the time!

This week's topic:
Top Fifteen Books On My Winter TBR

This week's topic is almost a month early, but I enjoy rounding up my most-anticipated titles each season. I still haven't read a lot of my Autumn Musts, but I have many of them on my shelf to read over the next month, so there's still time!

Five of these titles were on last week's TTT for anticipated sequels, SO I'm doing a Top 15 to add ten new titles. Okay? Okay ^_^

In no particular order...
Fast grab! Here are nine of the titles on my list! ^.~

1) THE ORPHAN QUEEN by Jodi Meadows

Out March 10, 2015

Probably my MOST anticipated Winter title. I loved Jodi's Incarnate Trilogy, and this one is going to be so heavy on the fantasy. Cannot. WAIT!!!! I'm speechless over this one!

2) VALIANT by Sarah McGuire
Out June 9, 2015

I know this title isn't out for a long while, but I want to read it so, so badly. FAIRY TALES!!! Especially when they're more obscure! My excuse is that I'll need to be prepared early for Fairy Tale Fortnight! ^.~

3) THE RETURN by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Out Feb. 17, 2015

I loved the Covenant Series, and am really excited for the spin-off. I'm also looking forward to attending Apollycon in February to celebrate the book's release! (Will you be there, too?)

My Review: HALF-BLOOD, PURE, DEITY, ELIXIR, APOLLYON

4) A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC by V.E. Schwab

Out Feb. 24, 2015
I adore Victoria Schwab, and have been following her career since the very beginning. She's just getting better and better, and now, with the upcoming release of her second adult novel, is set to improve on the praise she got from her first adult novel VICIOUS. I'm so excited to see what world she introduces us to now!

5) DEFY/IGNITE by Sara B. Larson

DEFY out now
IGNITE out Dec. 30, 2014
I get to be on tour with this series no January 5th! I've had DEFY sitting on my nook since it came out, and I STILL haven't read it! Well...at least I get to gulp down two books at once!

6) BEASTKEEPER by Cat Hellisen

Out Feb. 3, 2015
Once upon a time, I heard that Caat Hellisen was working on a fairy tale based on one of my favorite stories, Beauty and the Beast. I'm so excited to finally read it and discover a new twist to my beloved tale!

7) SEEKER by Arwen Elys Dayton

Out Feb. 10, 2015

This has been on my wishlist since early 2013, way before it started getting discovered and buzz. I'm so bummed I haven't had time to read my copy yet, but so excited. I love a good fantasy, and I'm really looking forward to this one!

8) RED QUEEN by Victoria Aveyard

Out February 10, 2015
I've been hearing really amazing things about this book from people who have already had the pleasure of reading it! I've been trying really hard to wait and read some more 2014 titles, but I'm itching to get back to a good fantasy!

9) FAIREST by Marissa Meyer

Out January 27, 2015
While I'm bummed that we have to wait a little longer for WINTER, I'm so excited to see what makes Queen Levana tick! I'm also excited to host another week-long event in January!

My Reviews: CINDER, SCARLET, CRESS, GLITCHES, THE QUEEN'S ARMY, THE LITTLE ANDROID

10) KING by Ellen Oh

Out December 31, 2014
I decided to wait and binge-read this series back to back instead of reading a book each year. I'm so excited to finally read this. I wanted this series before it ever had a cover, when it was just a publishing deal!!

11) TEAR YOU APART by Sarah Cross

Out January 27, 2015
I am beyond ready to return to Beau Rivage for more fairy tale adventures. KILL ME SOFTLY was a true stand-out for me, one of my favorite fairy tale novels...and a book I would have never read if someone hadn't told me it was a fairy tale in the first place! I've been hoping and hoping that SArah Cross would come out with more tales from Beau Rivage, and she has.

MY REVIEW: KILL ME SOFTLY, AFTER THE BALL

12) THE WINNER'S CRIME by Marie Rutkoski

Out March 3, 2015
I'm kind of afraid to read this, to tell you the truth. I've been sitting on it for a month already. I read the first book so early, and if I read this super early, well... I know there will be no ARCs of the final book, so it wil be a long wait. But I really, really want to get back to this world because it's so good! GAH, SEQUELS!

(I haven't reviewed this yet, because I read it over a year before it came out, and I haven't re-read it yet. I'm planning to do so before I read TWC, so look for a review in 2015!)

13) THE STORYSPINNER by Becky Wallace

Out March 3, 2015

I'm ashamed I haven't read this already, but I'm trying SO HARD to be good and wait. I've wanted to read this one since the publishing deal announcement when I saw Becky's agent tweet about it. IMMEDIATE WANT!

14) DEAREST by Alethea Kontis

Out February 3, 2015

Alethea Kontis is always a favorite of mine. She's a fantastic human being, and her books are just as wonderful! Plus, more fairy tales!!! I'm really excited to finally get to this one!

MY REVIEW: ENCHANTED, HERO

15) THE START OF ME AND YOU by Emery Lord

Out March 31, 2015

I loved OPEN ROAD SUMMER so, so much, and I'm really looking forward to digging into another book by Emery Lord! And you KNOW I'm not big on contemporary! But I can't wait to read this!!!

MY REVIEW: OPEN ROAD SUMMER

What books are you looking forward to reading this Winter? ^_^

I am different. I have always been different, but no one can know or my life will be in danger. So I hide in plain sight, wearing drab clothes and thick glasses and trying to be invisible. I’m so good at hiding, no one has ever noticed me. Until Ian…the mysterious and oh-so-cute boy I know I need to avoid.

Now I have been seen. And more terrifying still, I am wanted—by those who would protect me and those who would destroy everything and everyone I love. But if they’re all terrified about who I am, wait until they see what I can do…
