MYTHOLOGICAL MONDAYS: Mythology Told Through Lyrics

Mythological Mondays is a feature I created to spotlight books brimming with--you guessed it--mythology! I adore this sub-genre and can't wait to share my love with all of my fellow bookworms! This feature isn't just focused on novel reviews; it may also include interviews, looks at original mythological tales, etc. Please feel free to do this with me! If you guys ever do a mythological feature and want to join this and snag my lovely mermaid, I would LOVE to see the feature. I’ve even included a Linkbox for you. It doesn’t have to be Greek mythology, or even mythology per say. It can be mermaids, unicorns, or heck, even fairy tales (because I’m too lazy to do a separate fairy tale feature…). It doesn’t even have to be every Monday. I’m sure there will be Mondays when I skip, too. ^_^

I was going to review ABANDON by Meg Cabot today, but I have a terrible headache and can't really concentrate. So I'll post that next week.

Instead, I'm going to cop out and leave you with the official music videos for not one, but TWO artists I like who incorporated mythology into their songs:

DON'T LOOK BACK by She & Him:

This video is based on one of my all-time favorite myths, the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice (which you can read online here).

If you think you recognize the brunette, it's because actress Zooey Deschanel is the "She" in She & Him. :)

And for my friends across the pond, we have

SPIRALLING by  Keane:

[Embedding is disabled; please visit this link to watch the video on You Tube. ^_^]

This one has roots in Ovid's Metamorphoses during the part that talks about Pygmalion. If you like groups such as Coldplay and Snow Patrol, why are you not listening to Keane? :(

What are some other songs centered around mythology that you enjoy? Or even fairy tales! Here's one of my favorite fairy tale-inspired songs,

CINDERELLA by Steven Curtis Chapman:

It makes me tear up every time! I especially love this version of the video because Steven talks about what inspired him to write CINDERELLA. This is definitely a song for father-daughter weddings, don't you think?

I would love to know about more songs that were inspired by various tales!

How about you? What do you think?

  1. Hope you feel better soon. I think Zooey is great actress, her like her films too. I haven't read any mythologies in a long time. I don't think I have any on my to read list either, so I will be checking to see if you read one that I might find interesting.

  2. @Lena: Thanks! I feel great today. Yesterday, I was on and off all day. Maybe it was the weather, or maybe I didn't sleep enough! I just couldn't concentrate at all. And I'd put together all the images for ABANDON, too. *boo* (Sorry I abandoned you for a week, ABANDON...)

I think my favorite film with Zooey is (500) DAYS OF SUMMER.

I've read so many great mythologies lately! There are some great self-pubs for cheap, too, especially BETRAYAL by Mayandree Michel and SOLSTICE by PJ Hoover (which I'll review soonish)!
